Week 25 - The Championships, Wimbledon - Qualifying - grass

Katy's match is identical so far to Esther's and Dani's
With the 'better' player all at sea in the first set, looking like they dont know one end of a racket from the other
And then they begin to acclimatise, cut out the ridiculous errors, and the Brit looks a touch more tired, not quite the same zip on the serve, a few errors creep in
And.... you know the rest
We've had one thirds set one way, and one the other, so...

I fear for Katy from this point, this third set could be quick

It was daft
Katy has a really hard game - but holds
Then works two bps for herself
It's obvious that Sas. isn't enjoying it
You need to make her suffer
Katy gets 2 second serves
And goes for broke on both and doesn't even get the ball in the court
Just daft shot choices, especially the second which was really wild and falling over

She's intending on going out in flames one way or another.

Im sorry and I know a lot of people, including me, are fond of Katy

But she's spent the past few games talking to Anbabel Croft''s daughter (i think it is), after every shot, rather than playing tennis, and keeps saying:

:this is why I'm stopping, coz of moments like this"

If you're stopping, Katy, stop

Let someone else have the chance, let Ella get on the court, and don't bother playing wildcard playoffs

(And if you're not stopping, then quit the amateur dramatics)

Yes. I think Katy perhaps such put such a premium and emotional investment in making it through pre qualies to end her career at Wimbledon, that she didn't really think or apply herself properly to the possibility of winning a match or two. Almost like having made it she checked out a little as 'this is my last match', if that makes sense? Because she could have won that.

Lily lost in straights and was pretty meek. I can't imagine she's got many more days in events at this level left either.

After a tough opening few games Heather settles down and shows a bit of class.

6-2

Someone we can't criticise for not trying is Heather even if she isn't the player she once was, takes the first set 6-2

I think you are all right about Katy. She's been hinting about stopping for a while now so I wouldn't be surprised.

Big hug from Abigail after the match, and also from her family (I was sitting next to them during the match and chatting to her dad)

 Maybe.....

But there are women on these courts giving their all, absolutely dying, and Katy (who had the great luck to get a wildcard, whether won 9r given, it doesnt matter), was effectively messing around, telling everyone she's stopping, as though that made it ok

I thought it was dreadful

If I'm Brooke Black (who Katy narrowly beat) and see Katy treat the match like that I'd be more than a little disappointed

So how many of you actually watched the match ? I didn't notice Annabell's daughter there, but she did talk to her coach a lot.

Ella missed a set point at *5-1

British girls doing well coming out the blocks today, we've been a set and a break up a few times but mixed results from there.

Sherif shanks her way to 40-0*, and Heather has three match points. Floats a defensive slice long, Sherif winner (but too passive from Heather and it gave her the opportunity), another cautious rally and she goes long.

Just was waiting for Sherif to lose there. Excellent response to the drop shot to get match point 4. Yes! She actually tries to win it and she does!

Woohoo.
