Week 26 - The Championships, Wimbledon (grass) - men's qualifying

Great job, SC

This was Doonan's helpful answer to a few of my ignorant 'who's that?' questions:

"Prado Angelo is a former junior number one who has taken time to progress in the mens game by is nearly top 150 now. He doesnt, however, appear to play any grass court events (certainly not this year) so looks a good draw unless he takes to it like a duck to water. Carballes Baena is a former top 50 player but is 33 and on his way down. Not much of a Wimbledon record either"

Billy and Anton up first, at 11

Henry Searle beat Angelo in R1 of junior Wimbledon when the Bolivian was top seed.

The Show Court 1 schedule tomorrow, which I assume is the court being covered by the BBC, has Dan second, followed by Liam

13 Brits in Q including 5 DEs.

In total before taking WCs into account this year we have 3 MD DEs and 11 Q DEs, with 6 of the Q DEs receiving MD WCs.

I think some unprecedented numbers there.

I don't know how many will be left on Wednesday but it's certainly wonderful to see so many

We all remember tons of Wimblys with about 8 in qualis, all wildcards, as the DE lot got bumped up, and none of the wildcard ones had much of a chance, all down in the 300-400s, and we'd all go crazy when we got one QR1 win

Good ol' days ...... not !

If we add in Eastbourne, 20 men still playing in both events. 20!

Ps 13 is 10% of the field. So I hope to see 1.6 qualifiers this week. No pressure lads

Ive not really had chance to look through the mens draw in depth or ahead in terms of who they might face.

A quick glance has me thinking we may get 4-5 first round wins out of 13 and I think we will end with 1 or possible 2 qualifiers, but more likely 1.

I hope I am overly pessimistic there - we have done well in the mens on grass this season and no reason why that shouldn't continue but it feels to me like we have some tough draws, albeit not against too many grass court players. Nonetheless, grass could be harder than normal and that may not help

I see the opening round match between Blanch and Blanchet has been, well, blanked... one of them has withdrawn

Anton had a set point in the first set breaker but lost it 8-6 - however he's just broken for *3-1 in the second set.

Billy comes through comfortably 6-2 6-2.
