Virtanen is a superb fast surfaces player, Indy. All of his 10 challenger finals have come on grass or indoor hard. I certainly hope he avoids our lads in Wimbly qualifying.

Thanks wolf for such context that I didn't know before I plunged in ( though I guessed he couldn't be thought of as too bad at all on the surface, given the extreme odds ).

All the more credit to Billy for at least taking him to 2 TBs, although there were no breaks of serve in the match with just 2 BPs each.

It looked like a real grass court match, for sure, and Billy also knows how to play on grass, much more than Felix for sure. Which makes the call to exclude him from the MDWC list more disappointing.

PS Virtanen was also junior Wimbledon doubles finalist in 2018, to add to his fast court credentials. The Finns, of course, have to play indoors for much of the year when growing up and so are attuned to the faster surfaces; Harri H mentions it quite a bit, that he was brought up on and plays most naturally on indoor, hard or grass, seen in his doubles results

Very perplexed about Billy's exclusion - seems really harsh as he's established himself in the top 150 and has shown that he's very capable at this level.

Plus he has a ton of points to defend over the next 2 weeks from making Eastbourne QFs and second round at Wimbledon, and he's effectively been deprived of defending a lot of those points

Forgot about those, that really makes it a lot worse. Just hoping Stan pulls out and that Billy gets a chance of a reprieve

All these points. The guy must be quite decent on grass then. Who knew ...

Virtanen won his semi and that takes him to his second final of the challenger series, after being in the Birmingham final. He and Bu have both made two of the finals
