I hope Jane wins too....once I thought she'd have a great career....shame that things have not gone so well for her. Nice girl too.

Great to see Naomi Cavaday getting a qualies wc !!! Thorougly deserved after her fantastic performances this year. She faces a really tough match against Tatiana Poutchek in rd1 though. Naomi is ranked 565 though her current playing strength would probably put her around the 300 mark. Poutchek is ranked 133 and has been as high as no 55 so this'll be a real step up in class from the opponents who Naomi has been playing. Both players have yet to compete on grass.

To be quite honest I can't see any of the British women winning a round in qualifying. Rebecca Llewellyn's opponent, 2nd seed Emanuelle Gagliardi is the world no 98 and has been as high as no 42. While Rebecca has been grinding it out in futures, Gagliardi has been playing the French Open and took a set off Danielle Hantchukova in rd2 before losing in 3. Gagliardi is a really powerful left-hander with a monstrous forehand.

Claire Peterzan has the best draw, her opponent is ranked 157 but that's still nearly 300 places above Claire and also Ahsha is on-form on grass having reached the Surbiton quarters.

If Jane O'Donaghue was on form, I'd reckon that she'd have a decent chance of beating 13th seed Vasilla Bardina [wr:124] on her fav surface. However, Jane was absolutely terrible in Surbiton qualies, spraying the ball anywhere but the court and she seemed unable to construct a decent rally. She was getting very down on herself in the match aswell.

Naomi Cavaday, one of the rising stars of British tennis overcame a ranking gap of over 400 places to move into the final round of qualifying at the DFS Classic, held at the Edgbaston Priory Club, Birmingham.

The 17 year old from Chislehurst in Kent, ranked only 565 in the world outlasted world number 133 and 16th seed in qualifying Tatiana Poutchek of Belarus 7-6(5),3-6,7-6(6).

“It’s a great achievement for me as I know I can compete and win against these top players now,” said Cavaday. “They have so much more experience than me as I only started playing senior events last November, plus it was my first ever match on grass which took some adjusting.”

“I learned a lot from last week as I lost in the final round of qualifying for the French Open juniors 10-8 in the final set having held five matchpoints. That match taught me a lot, and helped me keep my head today, especially when she saved my first three matchpoints in the tiebreak,” added the teenager.

Cavaday who is currently the 15th highest ranked player in Great Britain won in 2 hours 54 mins for the best win of her young career. Currently Britain’s top junior, the former Bromley High School pupil is now part of the Lawn Tennis Association’s performance programme at London’s Queens Club where she is coached by James Trotman.

The victory will see the Kent teenager moving inside the top 500 for the first time, having already risen over 300 ranking spots since January. If she can defeat top seed and world number 85 Melinda Czink of Hungary in the final round of qualifying, she will move into the main draw of the DFS Classic, headlined by 2004 Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova.

“Czink will be a tricky match-up,” said Cavaday. “She is a fellow lefty, but I already practiced with her earlier today so I know I can live with her.”

Wow, that's an absolutely sensational win for Naomi !!! Poutchek's such a quality player, she plays WTA events on a regular basis ! It's amazing that Naomi's only been playing senior events since the end of last year and barely 6 months later, she's beating former top 50 players !!!! This is by far and away a career best win for her, her previous best win was over someone ranked in the 300s.

Naomi did extremely well holding her nerve in those breakers, especially in the 3rd set one when it must have been really tense. It's great that she was able to learn from her loss in Paris and use that experience to her advantage - shows that she has an excellent mental approach to the game. She really deserves a Wimbledon wildcard into the main draw this year.

All the other results were fairly expected, though Claire Peterzan missed a great chance to take a set off Anne Kremer, she served for the 1st set at 5-3 before choking and losing 10 of the next 11 games.

Another really, really poor performance from Jane, she's only won 3 matches this year and a lot of her losses have been quite heavy thrashings. She just doesn't seem to be able to find any consistency in her game at the moment.

Rebecca put up an extremely good performance against a top 100 player ! 6-4, 7-6 is a very respectable scoreline. It's a lot better than her last match agains an opponent in the top 100 - she lost 0 and 1 to Kuznetsova in rd1 of Wimbledon 2005.

Looking ahead to rd2 qualies this morning:

Before yesterday I would have said Naomi has no chance against Czink but after yesterday's win she has every chance of an upset, her confidence must be sky high right now and she doesn't sound in the least bit fazed by Czink. Having practised with Czink will surely help a lot.

Some info on Czink: She beat Keothavong in 3 sets in the Fed Cup. Currently ranked 85 though she's been as high as 64. She reached rd2 of the French Open before losing to Myskina. This year, she's reached 1 semi and 3 quarter-finals of WTA events.
