First to say the euros are no easier than the World Cup, if anything harder as a tournament. We - and the other home nations - host the next ones but weve been there before recently and lost in the final to Italy. My feeling is right now we arent good enough to win but we are good enough for semis or a final, draw depending. Familiar?
Last night v France was just a great game of rollicking fun. Has no bearing on anything - first half we dominated, France decided to play in the second half and came back and the game was just an open slug fest. Wouldnt have happened in a real World Cup match!
In terms of players and Tuchel and tactics - for those on twitter take a look at this Gary Neville clip before the tourney began
It is spot on - wrong squad picked and meant we could retain possession well or progressively. That was so true. We got tired with all the travel and tough matches we had and against Argentina it came home to roost - both the lack of ability to control as well as tiredness.
The control thing is on tuchel and squad selection. In the match v Argentina, the falling back on defence started to happen naturally after the Gordon goal but Tuchel made it much worse with the changes he made and taking us to 5 at the back and then 6. It was a disaster and, for me, Tuchel proved not the messiah some thought after Southgate.
The France match doesnt change that at all. I agree saka and rashford should have been on earlier if Gordon had to come off. Kane comes too deep and should have been subbed. All that is on Tuchel.
But last night was fun and glad it ended on a high, however meaningless.
