Did anyone watch the match? just from watching the score tick over it seemed a close fought match with many games going to deuce, and Swan seemed to put Martincova under a whole heap of concerted pressure.
I watched for 3-2 second set and other than a brief blip on one of her service games which she still won, Katie looked pretty good. Very much in control.
Earlier in the set there wasn't much to choose between them but Katie toughed it out after which there was only one winner
Thanks B00thy, yeah that 2nd game in the 2nd set where Swan held her serve to go 2-0 up was a marathon I remember, her opponent had several break points.
Emerson Jones - big crowd watched her on the third show court. Lots of support for Emerson. I saw Jovic last year and thought maybe Emerson would be this years version. She hits hard and clean but her older opponent out smarted her. I thought Jones had turned it round though but out of nowhere she served three straight doubles, 7 actual serves out. She just fell apart at the end. They shook hands but it was very pithy and Jones obviously realised she messed that up.
Katie - well, I watched the first few games straight after seeing Emerson, but it was powder puff stuff being honest and left me quite cold. I hate saying that as I know Katie is a big favourite here. She was steady and controlled but the match left me underwhelmed and we left after half a dozen games. The court she was on was next to a picnic area and whilst a number of people were there, attention seemed poor and little atmosphere - which was a shame. Court next to her was empty and they had one of the scoreboards on that court weirdly. Which is all a shame - but I see she won and hopefully will continue to pick up. No signs of any injury of any type that I saw.
Sorry I am not more enthusiastic about Katie but it is how I saw it.
One final comment - ALL courts had Hawkeye and no line judges, not one. I hadnt realised challenger and WTA125 events had that in place, and it was good to see.
I've just got home from my two days at Ilkley. Lovely to be there. Shame about the weather. Haven't suffered rain there for some years so I was probably due for it tbh.
I didn't have Centre Court tickets for either of the two days.
On Tuesday the chance of watching Brits on courts 1-5 was limited. Billy was playing on Centre.
I watched bits of Swiss qualifier Naef beating Korneeva. Nice match, not memorable.
Americans Mary Stoiana beating Kayla Day, again nice match but not memorable.
Highlight was watching the full match of Lulu Sun v Ella McDonald.
I've seen Ella before at Ilkley and her ground strokes are good and accurate. They worked well for the first set while Lulu looked oddly out of sorts on the grass. Ella was volleying efficiently at the net when required. In the second set Lulu established herself and produced penetrating ground strokes at the expense of Ella. The third set, Ella did have a couple of strong games where she mixed up the pace and length and got the better of Lulu, but then fell away. I feel that Ella is a strong and talented player who has a lot to learn about constructing a point and developing a range of weapons. At the moment she is still rather one-dimensional.
An LTA official commented to me that they were pleased they got more matches played than they were expecting to with the awful forecast.
NB. I don't think the indoor courts can be used for the tournaments these days. They were in the past and I remember seeing Pegula playing indoors here, but not now. Maybe because the ATP and WTA tournaments have upgraded, the indoor courts don't reach the minimum standard any more.
Today (Wednesday)
Another frustrating morning of showers, some heavy. Today the courts were prepared and dried for use and then the covers with ventilation were put on. So when the showers were finally over, the courts were pretty much ready, all except for poor Court number 5 which has a major drainage problem and had to have a trench dug next to one corner to help it drain. It will probably be ok now for the rest of the tournament.
Watched the conclusion of Tararudee beating Shymanovich. Got a selfie with Tararudee afterwards YAY!
(Watched some of Riedi v Hamish but get bored with mens baseline tennis, so didn't stay long)
Watched some of Katie Swan's long awaited match (moved from Court 5) v Martincova. Katie was not looking particularly good. I haven't seen her before. I know that this board in general has high expectations of her if she can stay free from injury but I didn't really see her potential so moved away after watching a few games. I'm glad she won though.
One of the delights of Ilkley is always the practice courts. Players crowd onto them and its a great place to try and recognise players. We enjoyed watching some Americans (Clervie Ngounoue and Ivana Corley) practising doubles together.
Highlight of Wednesday was Court 2 Mimi and Alicia Dudeney v Emily Appleton and Pridankina.
Alicia was very sharp at the net, although a weaker server. Mimi was a strong server but error-prone
Emily App was agile and skilled and Pridankina was a strong server and skilled. They deserved their win. Mimi had her moments but made far too many errors. Alicia D was delightful to see in action. She is very pro-active.
Our enjoyment of the match was even better because Ivana Corley sat near us and we were talking to her and then Maddie and Millie Rajecki came and sat next to us. Such a cameraderie between these doubles players. Millie said she's not getting LTA support and she is trying to make her own way. She was enjoying lodging with a family in Ilkley for the tournament. Ivana and Maddie/Millie learned very late on that their matches had been postponed until tomorrow.
Ilkley is a gem of a tournament, so friendly, although this year the crowds were rather subdued and there was not much atmosphere.
At least this year I didn't have to suffer a near assault from Terence Atmane!!!!
Wimbledon next for me. Court 2, first Wednesday.
Forgot to mention the other best match I watched today which was young Emerson Jones v Dalma Galfi.
No doubt of Emerson's talent, but she is young and crumbled rather suddenly at the end (as reported already by JonH).
I was impressed by Dalma Galfi who I had thought of as a journeywoman tennis player, making a living presumably but not much more on the ITF circuit. Her strong physique, mental attitude and solid determination saw her come through against Emerson and she deserved the win. Emerson definitely a star of the future though.
Hi Canda - we missed each other again!! Seems we have similar views on what we saw re Katie (and wish her well - see she is on centre tomorrow!) and Emerson. Phew!!
Agree a little re atmosphere - big crowd of course but Jakes match was very subdued in terms of people being into it; bit more lively for Paul Jubb, but he is Yorkshire.
Did you glean who the MC lady was - in the past it has been Abigail but she must have moved on and I didnt know this person?
