RE: ATP Queens [other brits] - qualies + main draw

Even though Verdasco is more of a clay courter I feel I'd say this would be a big scalp and give Mackin alot of confidence if he's able to pull off the win.. As it would be his 1st against a top 100 player if he did..

Lee . Stakhovsky 6-4 v6-2

Mackin v. Verdasco[1] 6-7(5) 7-6(9): 3rd Set:

Mackin holds: 1-0
makin breaks: 2-0
Mackin holds to 30: 3-0
Verdasco holds: 3-1
Mackin broken to 30: 3-2 on serve
Verdasco holds after saving a bp: 3-3
Mackin broken after 3deuces: 3-4

Verdasco serving: 30-0...40-0 looks like that game may have been the straw that breaks the camel's back for Mackin ...40-15...game.

Absolutely I wasn't trying to imply that wouldn't be the case, sorry if I did.

Oh well sad to hear that..

At least Mackin has put up a stern effort against a top 32 player and fair play to him.. Should give him confidence going further into the grass court season towards Wimbledon but hopefully he breaks here..

Verdasco serving for the match: (he's missed 3 match points so far, let's hope Mackin him can deny him anymore at all!)15-0...15-15 double fault...15-30 double fault, choking perhaps? come on mackin, make him pay!...30-30...40-30 match point Verdasco...GSM.

Mackin had a mammoth task and rose to it. It's a shame that he couldn't win the match in the end but I don't he should be too dissappointed with himself, after all Verdasco is a top 50 player.

The match took 2hrs 47min and 13secs, so not a short one!

Glad you all enjoyed it.

It was great stuff from Martin Lee, I really hope he can go on to qualify. A real shame for Mackin though, but he should be encouraged by how close he came.

just got back from queens,

the matches i saw, and a bit of extra info, at the end of the 2nd set tb in mackin verdasco verdasko called for a trainer, i left at the point to go watch martin lee vs sthak.

mackin should have taken the 2nd set much esier then he did because he shot out the blocks and went 3-0 up and even had a good chnace to go 4 love up, was a very close match with some hard hitting. and great work by alan to stay in it at the end of the 2nd set.

lee vs sthak was fairly comfortable, sthak has a big serve, but just couldnt seem to get his game working and he was consantly arguing with the umpire. at one point she gave him a warning for code violiation cause he said 'god damit'. he couldn't belive it, but she said was a swear word.

lee's final round oppont frutturo really impressed me. big serves, attacking the net, snd some great low volleys. martin will have to be on top form to beat him tomorrow (i did see martin watching the match - and keaving at the end with a blonde girl)

Are you going today aswell, Count ?

Sounds like the Mackin-Verdasco match was a real cracker to watch, were you impressed by Mackin's game ? Do you think he's developed some more weapons in his game which can hurt top 100 opponents other than just his speed and consistency ?
Such a shame that Alan wasn't able to cash in his 3-0 lead in set 3, I always felt that Verdasco would come back and Alan would need a double break to make sure. He had a bp for 4-0 in the 3rd but missed it, that could have been the turning point because then Verdasco won the next 5 games.

Martin Lee sounds in impressive form, amazingly he's never won a main draw match at Queens, hopefully he can rectify that this year. Was he serve-volleying all the time or mixing it up ?

Sounds like Stakhovsky needs to brush up on his knowledge of the english language, lol ! He has a tendency to get tight in matches and tries to compensate with extra power but ends up overhitting.

Overall today was a good one for the brits I think, at the start I don't think many of us thought we would get any players in the qualifying round and we nearly had two.

Highlights were obviously Martin Lee's 2 straight sets wins especially the Burgsmuller one [though he did benefit from Llodra withdrawing at short notice and being replaced by Stakhovsky]. Alan Mackin showed he can compete with top 100 players on grass and will be one of the favourites in the wc playoff this week, someone on MTF said that his ability to read the Arthurs serve was extremely impressive.
Also, Andy Kennaugh taking a set off someone ranked 600 places higher boded very well for the future.

The big disappointment was Arvind Parmar, the section opened up with Karlovic's withdrawal but after the 1st set he seemed to fall apart and just fell away in set 3. On grass, Niemeyer was really an opponent he should have beaten
