Fonseca comes of age

Djokovic 6-4 6-4 3-6 5-7 5-7 Fonseca

Joăo Fonseca has been a rising star for a couple of years, but today he has really come of age.  The 19-year-old has now reached the fourth round at a Grand Slam for the first time in what is just his sixth major.  He's the first Brazilian man to reach that stage since Thomaz Bellucci at the 2010 French Open.

And after today's performance, some will be wondering if he can emulate Brazilian icon, Guga Kuerten, by even lifting the title.

biggrin

This is really turning out to be one of the most interesting and unpredictable slams.

I really do fancy a South American to take this, lets see. Fonseca would be great for the game and I love the Guga analogy. Just loved Guga!

 Yes.

Loving the fact that 'very young Spain' is stepping up to help take the place of injured 'still pretty young' star of Spain

There's two Spanish recent US Open Junior champions still going (so not really a purely clay thing)

And Fonseca is in there too, of course

As well as the ultra young French lad

A lot of Next Gen going on there

Its also making my mouth water to see how all these players will get on playing the grass - Cerundolo older is a recent Eastbourne champion so clearly their games can translate across. Kouame, Fonsec, Jodar - fascinating!

De Jong as a lucky loser in the last 16 also.

Watching Faria with interest also - I third round today, due to play Ilkley, at least at the current time

De Jong is 25, with his leg strapped up like a mummy, and a tiny lad

With his LL spot, it's wonderful how the gods can smile once in a while

But I don't think he's quite in the same category as the others mentioned

Well, at least the Cerundulo family will be having a blast tonight

From the Beeb's live commentary on today's action:

A fine day for the Cerúndolo family607

F Cerúndolo 2-6 6-4 6-2 6-1 Gaston

Juan Manuel Cerúndolo caused a massive shock on Court Philippe-Chatrier by beating the world number one and French Open favourite, Jannik Sinner.  His older brother, Francisco Cerúndolo, is also into round three with a four-set win against Frenchman Hugo Gaston.

If their respective winning runs continue, they could meet in the semi-finals...

wink

Francisco (25) succumbed to Svajda in five sets (3-6 4-6 6-3 6-4 3-6), but Juan Manuel overcame Landaluce in five (6-4 6-7(7) 7-6(4) 6-7(4) 7-6(10-8) in two minutes shy of SIX hours)!

Berrettini won in 5 hours 13 as well. There have been a lot of long matches!
