What's going wrong? Is Haddad Maia playing especially well or Fran not so much?
I didn't see this as the easy draw which some had forecast. Fran's been well short of her best so far this year, and understandably so after that freak horror injury she suffered - and who knows if she's still experiencing lasting effects.
Plus she's yet to really produce her best in her slam - hasn't won a MD match at one yet, which is a bit of a psychological hurdle to overcome. And Haddad-Maia while streaky, can be really hard to handle on her day
Well Fran was 0-2 down in the second but then broke Maias serve and they are now 2-2. I would say Maia was playing well. Fran just needed to up her game which she has. Lets see what happens next.

Fran played quite poorly in the first set, no question
Just not dialled in - all a bit approximate
And H-M was bouncing all over the place
The second set has been more even, more of a grind, lots of breaks of serve, Fran seemingly more up for the fight
Not sure I'd put my money on Fran for the third, though, if we get there
