Week 20 - Grand Slam - Roland Garros, Paris, France - Clay

What's going wrong? Is Haddad Maia playing especially well or Fran not so much?

I didn't see this as the easy draw which some had forecast. Fran's been well short of her best so far this year, and understandably so after that freak horror injury she suffered - and who knows if she's still experiencing lasting effects.

Plus she's yet to really produce her best in her slam - hasn't won a MD match at one yet, which is a bit of a psychological hurdle to overcome. And Haddad-Maia while streaky, can be really hard to handle on her day

Well Fran was 0-2 down in the second but then broke Maias serve and they are now 2-2. I would say Maia was playing well. Fran just needed to up her game which she has. Lets see what happens next.

Don't forget that Haddad Maia has a CH of 10 from just three years go. A difficult opponent on her day with a big lefty serve.

Fran played quite poorly in the first set, no question

Just not dialled in - all a bit approximate

And H-M was bouncing all over the place

The second set has been more even, more of a grind, lots of breaks of serve, Fran seemingly more up for the fight

Not sure I'd put my money on Fran for the third, though, if we get there

Fran gets the second set TB

Early break and then kept it tight

But the third will be interesting

it's 32 degrees out there - a lot of players looking pretty hot and bothered (or not all that bothered in some cases)

Well she squeaked that second set 7-6, now nothing to lose Fran! Lets hope Maia loses the will a bit.

Great that Fran has more found herself after that very poor defeat last week and then that very poor first set here.

C'mon Fran, beat the heat and Haddad Maia !

Fran will win this now I think.

Emma struggling. Can't see her winning.

Mind you, Emma is looking anything but locked in!

Emma 4-0 down and looking clueless and like she doesn't really want to be there. Chance of a heavy defeat a real possibility right now.

Terrible by Emma so far. 11 unforced errors in 5 games.

Whats the odds the Emma retires if she goes down in the first couple of games in the second set?
