Neither of Ali or Hamish has ever won a challenger before. Fingers crossed for one of them to go and do it!

Been some good scheduling by the lads and good wins.

Alastair in particular, in his schedule in India and China since February, has now won 100 ranking points in that period and risen from WR 408 to live ranked 268, GB #15. Closing back in on his CH 237 from 2022.

SF:  (4) Petr Bar Biryukov (***) WR 335 (CH = 267 last October) vs (2) Alastair Gray WR 287

I seem to recall that he lost in three sets in an ill-tempered encounter with Alastair just last week.

Yes, Sheddie wrote at the time

Biryukov won't be sleeping well after that one. Had two match points on Ali's serve at 5-4 in the decider.

The Russian has a colossal left-handed serve - smoked 30 aces during the match. But from watching the match, he seems to be a bit of a headcase which is probably why he's not ranked higher. Seemed to be on the verge on imploding a number of times late in the decider, while Ali stayed very calm and composed and played a super solid tiebreak - including one brilliant bit of relex volleying to go 4-2 up.

Great win!

Still positive week and interested to see how he gets on with the grass in challengers and challengers qualies.

Ivashka has been top 40 in the world, so far from a pushover. Good to see Hamish closing in on the top 300

Ali in another tight battle with the Russian, into a third set after Ali took the opening set

Ali sadly unable to back up his hard-fought win last week:

SF:  (4) Petr Bar Biryukov (***) WR 335 defeated (2) Alastair Gray WR 287 by 3-6 6-4 7-6(5)  cry

Clearly well matched, Ali and Biryukov.

Not to be for the lads but decent run on the Indian hardcourts.
