Here's a thought - the Wildcard Committee are awaiting on a decision from Serena for the last slot, and if she says yes, then she gets the slot, and Heather gets the space in qualifying.
If Serena decides not to play, then Heather gets the last slot.
I know all of this is pure conjecture, but I think I could well be right.
Heather is in the qualifying draw using her Protected Ranking. Jodie obviously wants to save hers to use in the US and Australia. The fact Heather hasn't done so might raise questions on whether she intends to play beyond the US Open (which would make the decision not to get a farewell wildcard here strange). Or she, unlike Jodie, backs herself to not need a PR to play in Melbourne by the time January arrives.
Or maybe she wanted to save hers but they wouldn't give her a WC for qualis so she didn't have the choice, unlike Jodie?
I get them not wanting to split the juniors up, but this year Klugman's WC seems indefensible. Last year she seemed on the up, made the RG final at least. But in 12 months her senior world ranking has only gone up around 80 places and still sits outside the top 500... I do think quallies was the better option here.
I don't think it is indefensible.
In the last two weeks on grass Hannah has beaten a top 100 player in straight sets and pushed the world number 61 (at the time) to a very close three setter. Bearing that in mind, there's a reasonable section of the main draw that she could be competitive against.
Thanks Emmsie for explaining why Daniella got a qualifying wildcard - I hadn't known that fact.
If Heather is in the qualifying draw with a protected rankiing, then I guess the last slot is Serena v Next Direct Acceptance. I suppose they could still be waiting on Serena, and bump up Heather to the main draw?
The wildcard play offs should be really high quality; looking forward to that, and to see which players are on form and come through - if there are 16 players for 4 slots, then I assume everyone will play one match per day, which would be far better than in previous years, where some players have played draining 3 set matches and then gone out in the next round to a player who has come through easily in 3 sets.

Tbf there is no comparison in ranking terms between the likely women's line-up and the quality they will have in the men's play-offs. Competitive looking - yes, and let them fight it out for 4 Q WCs. High quality - not really.

I think that's fair comment PeteM, and we know her underlying quality and potential.
I would have been interested to see the WC selection without Hannah's last couple of weeks, with just her previous underwhelming, strangely lackadaisical looking performances. To my mind It would then have been much more difficilt to justify her MD WC, Though maybe they were always giving her one.

I believe that they were always giving her one UNLESS she appeared for the pre-season on grass and looked a complete rabbit
She'd been playing well up to now, against players SO much higher, with one great win, and some decent scores
So, yes, she'd proved the 'I'm not a rabbit'
And today just confirmed it
I imagine she was feeling quite relaxed and happy, knowing she had the wildcard in the bag, and a free swing today
She certainly looked miles more motivated than at some venues previously (but that's teenagers for you)
Well done to Hannah having beaten Harriet - like others say, it does justify her selection, and at her age, performances are always likely to fluctuate and improvement is likely to be the same.
Re Indiana's comments on the quality of the play offs - you are probably right, in terms of rankings of those players, that maybe the quality won't be there, but then I guess it makes seanse to put them in play offs to see who is on form. The likes of Rannah, Ella and Amarni (if they are playing) though means that there should be some good players in the field and a chance for others to gain the big prize of competing in the qualifying of a Grand Slam.
It's a big pay day for those even reaching the qualies in addition to a decent points haul if they win a match in qualies so hopefully the playoff winners will be able to carry momentum in the qualifiers
