Week 10 - ATP Challenger 175 - Arizona Tennis Classic - Phoenix, AZ, USA (hard)

Some great play in these last few points ( I only saw the last few points ).

In the third set, having been broken in the 7th game he broke back right away. And then in game 10, great defensive then attacking play to get to each of his MPs, the second one which he took.

What a win. From losing the 2nd after having a match point and serving for it at 5-4 and then coming from a break down in the 3rd.

I think if Ive read Tennis abstract correctly, that is Billys best ever win by rank. He beat Cam when Cam was ranked 61, but no one higher I can see

eta - 3rd best, sorry. Etcheverry was 32 when he beat him at Queens. And RBA was higher at 40 in a Malaga Challenger, as well. Still

Yes, 32 in 2024 is what Pierrot has in his 'Career best singles wins' sticky thread in the general discussions section.

From what I saw at the United Cup at the start of the year, Billy started 2026 in good shape.

I've not watched him since ( and only came in for the last glory bit today ), and yes some disappointing results, but I am thinking that he was probably never really that far away from putting it together again. Great to see.

Billy, what a battler!

Watched bits, but switched off after the second set tiebreak as I thought he was done for. Switched back on with Mannarino up 4-3 with the break in the decider, only to see Billy win the final three games.

Felt like a brutal match. Mannarino still has some wheels on him at 37, and hitting through him on a sluggish surface is far from easy. The Frenchman wasn't a happy bunch in the second set, chuntering away to the umpire about fans moving in the crowd, and Billy taking too long between serves. "I'm waiting here for like 20 minutes for him to serve!"

The chuntering had an effect though, as the umpire began warning Billy about time between serves, and bizarrely decided to penalise him with a time violation at a crucial point with Billy serving at 4-5 in the second set breaker.

It meant Billy lost a first serve and he was absolutely fuming, calling the supervisor onto the court to dispute it, to no avail. Mannarino then wins the next point, and Billy gets another time warning as he's serving at 4-6 and goes on to lose that point too. At the change of ends, he's like, "You've had all set to warn me about time, and you chose to do it at 4-5 in the tiebreak." Which felt like a fair point.

Anyway, with all that, plus losing the second set after missing match point, this has to be one of the most impressive wins of Billy's career

The poor boy must be worn out after more than six hours on court in two days!

Looking through the points structures it's interesting for a SF you get less than a third of winners points in challengers but more than a third for the same thing in an ATP.

Yes, distinct from WTA points which are basically nowadays absolutely proportional between levels and between rounds progressed, which I rather like ( their points become pretty easy to remember ) as compared to some WTA points rubbish in past years.

Agreed - the ratios between rounds should be consistent across levels. No reason why they shouldnt be.
