LTA Wildcard playoffs -- history?

Does anyone know when the pre-qualifying event for Wimbledon (LTA wildcard playoffs) started?

What was the first year of the event?

Thank You,

Paul Epstein

From the Wimbledon website
"Wild cards have been allocated since 1977 and from 2003 some singles wild cards have been determined by competition."

Thanks a lot.  So 2003's my answer -- it's quite clear, but a difficult one to google (or get via AI).

I clicked on the link.  Most readers would probably assume that the "wild cards" refer to the main draw

rather than the Qualifying.

Note the tentative and misleading phrasing in a (successful) attempt to discourage people like me who try to spectate.
