Changing your profile name

Thanks Sheddie for doing that and to lambda for the idea. My other option had been Jon Bon Pollie , to keep the Jon in there - but hardly anyone else has their real name visible and i smiled when i saw the idea Lambda suggested so, hey.

Ok - so are anyone elses profile names any better, any more serious? Perhaps we can run though them all?

And how many peoples names around here to do we know? At least you all know my name? Perhaps other folks can start by sharing their name and then we can take them all seriously rather than as fake personalities:

Just a thought.

I like your new name formerly known as Jon! If it makes you happy, that's all that matters.

Ha - thanks Blue Belle. I guess it is supposed to be pronounced Polie or poley? Maybe the spelling is slightly off? Thoughts?

 Got to be 'Polly' smile

As in parrot

As in polls

As in pollface

(And as in rules of English pronunciation)

 What rules!?

seriously, should I change the spelling to make it clearer - not into the name changing game!

General rule:

before a double consonant, the vowel has it's normal phonetic pronuciation

before a single consonant, the vowel has it's 'name' pronunciation

think:

Holly versus Holy

Latter versus Later

(obviously there are tons of exceptions...... but that's the general rule)

'y' or 'ie' at the end makes no difference - Holly versus Hollie

And, NO, don't go changing it again - it's fine - and Sheddie has better things to do

And no one pronounces it anyway - we're a written forum !!!

Interestingly "Poly" is one of the exceptions! Polystyrene is pronounced the same as Polly Parrot. (Well, the first bit anyway)
