Not massively surprised. Only watched a few points but Bonzi was clearly hitting well.
IW is quite tricky - qualies haven't really.been a happy hunting ground for our guys traditionally. It can be slow, windy and conditions can change really quickly and unexpectedly
Brits have had more luck qualifying for Miami in the past so I'd expect JPJ and hopefully Billy to fare better there
as you say, Miami is faster and suits our guys more
I remember our DC Cup Final in 1978 - played away to USA in Palm Springs, which is similar and just by IW. Conditions as you describe and dead cold at night. We got stuffed by the USA team with a young Jonny Mac in place, alongiside Brian Gottfried versus Buster Mottram and John Lloyd.
Yeah IW is an odd one because we've had a few success stories - Jack and Cam winning, and Tiger Tim played some of his best tennis outside of Wimbledon there, made the final twice.
But lots of our lower ranked players have always struggled in the qualies, while it wasn't Andy's best masters even at his peak. I think it was the only hard court masters he never won (made the final in 09), and he never seemed to enjoy it
I could see why - went to IW for the first and only time in 2023. Stunning venue - really is Tennis Paradise, but as you say with the '78 DC final Jon, it can get crazily cold at night and so changeable.
