A win is a win, but I do think that Katie needed to play qualifying to get settled in. Quite a few errors mixed in with some good play.

Could definitely help her in the main draw. IW conditions aren't easy so having won a few matches always benefits qualifiers

As a seeded player Emma gets a bye in R1 and meets the winner of Ella Seidel WR83 and a qualifier in R2. If she reaches R3 she will probably play 6th seed Amanda Anisimova.
Sonay gets a qualifier in R1 and plays seed 20 Navarro in R2
Fran gets a qualifier in R1 and gets 2nd seed Swiatek in R2.

I guess qualies here are a bit like the football promotion play-offs - you'd prefer to progress without having to negotiate them but they can be great if you do come through them.

I noticed that Katie added 108 points - the full WTA 500 QF points - so last week must have cleared out the WTA 500 mandatory zero which was previously in her counters. Getting rid of 3 mandatory zeros in a few weeks helps.

As does winning big tennis matches
