Just didn't seem right that she was competing here after the long successful week she had in Brisbane. History and reports on her matches last week pointed to her being unlikely to get through this week, and that such issues occurred in her first match does ask more questions.
So what was it about?
Really trying to give herself a tough follow-up test? - that would seem foolhardy, indeed with the potential to set her back.
Trying to make Aus Open Q - maybe that was more of the issue / too much of the issue? Now, I know I have been posting re potential Aus Open qualifiers, indeed started a thread, included Katie and agreed that it was a possibility, I come at that largely from my tennis stats interest and have said that ultimately her ongoing health and fitness still had to come first. So maybe have it well in mind but be prepared to step back.
Now, so much is speculation and perhaps Katie was really confident about going again but there did seem enough signs in Brisbane to at least from afar question how wise that choice was.
Such a pity. I actually spoke to Katie's mum at Wimbledon Q and yes there was real confidence that that person she was referred to last year had got to the bottom of some stuff many others had missed over the years, indeed gone down the wrong road. So renewed hope, mixed with irritation at so many lost years. I soo hope that the difference is enough that she can continue and at least get back into the top 200 but it is not yet proving the panacea to her looking like she will truly ever get to where her sheer talent could take her and perhaps too much damage has been done long in the past for that ever to be possible. It would just be great if it could prove otherwise.
Yes, it's so puzzling that decision to compete at Sydney. She almost certainly knew that competing would aggravate the injury at some point and that would effectively end the season. So I guess she must have thought that a week's rest wasn't going to clear the issue and decided to play until the aggravation came and that turned out to be the next match.
Hey ho, end of her season and what a great one it was
I presume she was travelling to Sydney with Alex anyway so maybe she thought she might as well give it a go while she was on such a good run? Then when it proved to be too much she retired. I don't see a problem. And she's still on the entry list for Playford so we don't yet know whether she has finished her season.
