Luca Pow gets the first win on the board 3-6 6-1 6-4
Elsewhere, Savannah's quarter has really opened up with the 7th seed, Tavez, who was the favourite to progress from Savannah's quarter and NC State's freshman Tanasie having fallen in that quarter. Annabelle Xu, one of the 9-16 seeds in the quarter is currently in a third set battle to progress.
Edit: Xu also loses. That's the 3 strongest players in the quarter all losing in the 1st round. Savannah's quarter is wide open now.

SDM well in control. From the score so far, looking good.
Savannah completes a miserable day for the Xu sisters with a 6-3 6-3 win
Valerie Glozman (Stanford), the women's No 1 seed and most people's favourite for the title is out!
5 of the 10 women's seeds to have completed their matches are out - the No 1, No 7 and 3 of the 9-16 seeds.
After a lot of criticism of the men's seeds that is going much more to plan with 5 of the 7 men's seeds to have completed their match going through - No 2 seed Duncan Chan being the only real upset so far.
Luca Pow (Junior, Wake Forest) (#92) defeated Sam Landau (Indiana) (#71) 3-6 6-1 6-4 Will Jansen (Senior, Georgia) (#103) defeated Rudy Quan (UCLA) 6-7(5) 6-4 6-2 Roan Jones (Senior, UNC) (#38) defeated Paul Barbier Gazeu (South Carolina) 6-4 1-6 6-3
---- Round of 32 [4] Savannah Dada-Mascoll (Senior, Appalachian State) (#106) v Ria Bhakta (Junior, Clemson) [9-16] Gabia Paskauskas (Sophomore, Florida) (#55) v Mia Slama (Sophomore, NC State) (#72) Eva Shaw (Junior, Florida State) v [2] Carmen Herea (Sophomore, Texas) (#21)
Luca Pow (Junior, Wake Forest) (#92) v [9-16] Jakub Vrba (Sophomore, Arkansas) (#123) Will Jansen (Senior, Georgia) (#103) v [3] Aidan Kim (Junior, Ohio State) (#4) Roan Jones (Senior, UNC) (#38) v [8] Ozan Baris (Senior, Michigan State) (#7)
Savannah continues to make history. Being the first player to represent Appalachian State in singles at the championships, she obviously becomes the first player to represent them to win a singles match at the championships. I don't know anything about her 2nd round opponent other than Clemson women were generally inconsistent last season.
Gabia gets her 2nd 3 set win of the season over the USTA 18s girls champion and Stanford freshman and faces her former NC State teammate and good friend Mia Slama in the 2nd round. Gabia has shown marked improvement in the short time with her new Florida coaches, Per Nilsson and Axel Damiens and, while still a counter-puncher that is difficult to break down with no obvious weapons, is playing a relatively more aggressive game than she did last season. With the way she chases everything down I see her as the female Ollie Tarvet (in game style) Last season at NC State I saw little difference between Slama and Gabia, but Slama edged out Gabia at the No 6 position from early in the spring season. Slama also looks to have improved this season and has had impressive results this season including a 1 & 1 against Lacy. Be interesting to see which way it goes.
Eva had the unfortunate luck to be drawn in the so called quarter of death and is set to face the highest remaining seed in the draw. With women's seeds falling left, right and centre can she achieve the upset of round 2? Eva's quarter is the only quarter with all 4 seeds surviving round 1.
In the women's draw 7 of the 16 seeds fell, including the No 1, 5, 7 and 8 seeds. Na Dong, who primarily played at No 4 for Baylor last season, causing the massive upset of knocking out No 1 seed Glozman.
All our men face seeds in round 2. Luca has the best opportunity of the men to progress to round 3, playing a 9-16 seed. Apparently Luca has the 8th best UTR in the men's field.
I wasn't sure which way Will's match against Quan was going to go, so to come through is a good result. He now faces his doubles partner of last season. As Kim is 3rd seed and pre-season #4, he is obviously strong favourite against Will.
Roan also has a difficult 2nd round match ag Baris lost to the eventual winner in the last 2 NCAAs, being semi-finalist in Spring 2025 and finalist in the last championships.
In the men's draw 4 of the 16 seeds went out, with No 2 Duncan Chan (TCU) being the only top 8 seed to fall.
