British male player of the month - May

Nominees:

[1] Jamie Baker: Jamie enjoyed a successful spell in the 10K futures events in Greece in mid-May winning Greece F3 and reaching a quarter-final. He also teamed up with Jonny Marray in Greece F2 and reached the doubles semis

[2] Jonny Marray: Made an impressive return to form on the hard courts of Syros, winning Greece F2 without dropping a set. Also reached doubles semis that week with Baker.

[3] Morgan Phillips: Morgan had the most spectacular week of any British player in May. Ranked outside the top 750 he won the Italy F14 title, beating a series of opponents ranked 150-400 places higher. This catapulted him to a career high of 631 in the world. The week after he took a set off a top 300 player. His tournament success led to outrage among British tennis fans at the fact that there was no press mention of this achievement.

[4] Josh Goodall: Although he didn't win a title, he was Britain's most consistent player in Greece, reaching a quarter-final, a semi-final and the final of Greece F3. He also enjoyed a lot of success in doubles reaching a new career high of 215 at the end of May. In Greece, he and Richard Irwin reached 3 finals, winning 1 title and finishing runner-up twice.

[5] Neil Bamford: Bamford moved back close to his career high singles ranking with a welcome return to form in May. He reached two semis and won two doubles titles partnering Jim May. Now into the doubles top 500.

I'm gonna go for Morgan for winning the Italy F14 and beating opponents as high as 400 places above him is quite an achievement on the way to the Futures title.

Morgan Phillips without a doubt for me - although we did have a very good three weeks in Greece, our players were seeded high there so didn't have to beat such good opposition - after all, amie Baker was the top seed all three weeks so if he hadn't won at lkeast once it would have been a disaster from his point of view.

I don't think anyone ever expected press coverage of a Futures win by the way, it was the lack of acknowledgement by the LTA that annoyed so many of us.

Lol

As you can probably all guess, I voted for Jamie and I'll just about forgive you all for not voting for him too !!

Seriously though, I think that Morgan deserves the accolade, that was such an outstanding success for him and shows that all the hard grind he's been putting in is starting to pay off. He's really starting to flourish this year, he reached a semi aswell in April. Hopefully he can reach the top 500 by the end of the year, I think that's an achievable aim and he's got little points to defend so hopefully he can do it with a few more good runs in tournaments.
