Week 46 - ITF W50 Brisbane, Australia - Hard

Super to see again from Katie, and she's clearly now at her best level since she came back in April, which has tied in well with the ramp up this month of the Aussie tournament level.

In Australia, WR 445 at 08/09 as she started off in Wagga Wagga, as said she is now live ranked 291 on 234 points from 14 counters ( 251 points if she can win the final ).

In the 4 Aussie tournaments where she has stayed the course, including so far the final here, she has accumulated 114 out of a possible 138 points.

In another 3 ( Darwin 1 retired in R2, and then Darwin 2 and Brisbane 2 W35s pulled out of after illness ) she has only been able to score 4 points out of the 105 that were available from these tournaments.

So one could say, what might have been. As said, things need now to continue to go very well for her to keep in the Aus Open Q contention some of us have talked about being possible since her early days in Aus. It's great that she is where she is when things like Darwin have waylaid her. And as of now, whatever the short term brings, what she has managed to do has been great to see and looking very good ( fingers crossed ) for the longer term - eg. already, keep pretty fit and well, with the time available she has relatively little to do to secure at least Q spots in the French and US Opens. And in one way or another hopefully Wimbledon MD. Aus Open Q on top would be a bonus to have in mind but not at the expense of her longer term fitness, where I'd say she needs to end the season relatively healthy, ready for a productive quite short off season.

just watched the replay. This match was a step up from any other match this week, it looked to me like a match in the mid to low 100's. Katie was serving better in 1st set than I've seen this week and some lovely groundstrokes and was good for the first set against an opponent playing well.

In the 2nd game of the 2nd set she touches the bottom of her back on the left side and from here on she spends the rest of the 2nd set stretching her left leg, calf as well as hamstring and she gets tighter and tighter, losing the 2nd set because of the restriction which worsens as the set goes on.

she leaves the court for a toilet break, returning for the 3rd set but is feeling no better, so many hamstring stretches and back touches and it looks to be worsening .. and Jones capitalises. Then in game 5 Katie starts to look a little looser and by games 7 and 8 she is loose (or pain reduced significantly) and from here on in, she is back to how she was playing in the first set, swinging freely and dominates Jones to win the 3rd set.

I didn't see her have treatment but perhaps she took a painkiller during 2nd set but it took until middle of 3rd set to kick in.

She'll have had more work to loosen her back and crossing fingers she can play the Final

How good is Katie S? Just wondering if there are similarities in her career trajectory with Katie B , who suffered that horrendous back injury but re-bounded to eventually reach top 30s. Is Katie S potentially as good? There seems to be a lot of excitement on the board about her recent success hence the wondering!!

Difficult to say how good she would have been without the issues with her core that she has had since her teens but she would have definitely have been top 100, probably top 50. Beyond that nobody can say as it's about the improvement in the game that is key .. and mindset. Katie has always had the mindset.

The coming weeks W75 in Sydney is the last of the Australian events this year. So Katie's best possible outcome would be to win this week's final and then win next week's W75. That would take Katie to a ranking of around 225, so borderline for Australian qualifying. There are further possible tournaments e.g. W35s in New Zealand or the W100 in Dubai.

Worth a mention that Alex Bolt is in the mens challenger final as well. Katie goes first and Alex follows her. Would be very nice for them both if they both take a title!

There are 2 Australian W75s to come. Next week in Sydney, as you say, and also the following week in Playford. Katie is entered for both.

After that there is that Dubai W100 from 01/12 but in New Zealand only the Hamilton W15 from 08/12 would count by the ( assumed ) Aus Open Q cut-off date of 22/12.

She's not entered for Dubai so scratch that as an option. There are the events in France but being the WTA we have no idea if she entered either of those. Another option is a W3 in Egypt the week of the 8th if needed.

If she's struggling with her left side this week as appears to be the case then skipping next week's W75 Sydney has to be a possibility to allow recovery. We'll know more tomorrow I expect

Might be tongue in cheek, but Alex is there for her anyway

On a serious note, I can imagine Alex does give her coaching advice, hes got experience and seems a guy who knows his way around a court. And he obviously has been around the womens game as well.

good luck to both of them.
