The top seed in qualifying jumped ahead of most of those on the qualifying list by getting a WTA ranking.
Talia is coming back from injury. She played her first matches for 7 long months at the weekend. With this being where she now goes to University, she would have got a qualifying wild card if she had needed it. I hoped she might get a main draw wild card but perhaps its too soon in her recovery for that. She said on a couple of social media posts a couple of weekends ago that she had "found her spark" again since moving to Clemson after a difficult first year in US college at Florida.
Savannah may not be a name that is familiar to some here. She is in her final year at US College. This is her first pro tournament and she barely played on the junior circuit with her representing England at youth level in Netball before she went to US College. She is the story of the fall season in US College - and that's not just my bias - its the view of the most prominent commentators on women's US College tennis. The reason for that is she is in the form of her life and has unexpectedly beaten many top players to qualify for the NCAA Individual Championships later this month, not once but twice when she then became the Carolina regional co-champion. For context, the Carolina regional is the most stacked region in women's US College tennis. With her results in the fall season, she is expected to be top 10 in the college rankings when they are published at the end of the month. She surprised me in an interview recently when she said she has always been her intention to go pro after college.
Thanks Lambda - I also follow the college stuff from your posts and thank you! I try to keep my knowledge up to date but adding the odd update on who is in/out etc, hope that is ok?! Helps me engage with the posts and the college scene.
Quick question - Savannah is obviously playing here this week, and then down to Florida next week for the NCAA Finals (start on 18th?). Re the NCAA Finals, and your comment above, do experts think she has a shot at the NCAA title this month or is that still a longshot?!
Ooo, interesting. On paper this is a difficult match up. Bennett is the highest ranked player from last season's college rankings returning to college and last year's NCAA runner-up. But she has been out of form recently being on the wrong side of 3 set results in matches she would have won comfortably in straight sets earlier in the year. And she has failed to make the NCAAs this year, in part thanks to Savannah. Savannah played her 7 weeks ago and got everyone to sit up and take notice when she beat her in a college match at the All American Championships. So is winnable for Savannah but Bennett will know what to expect this time and will be smarting at not making the NCAAs with a point to prove. it will be interesting to see if she proves that point or Savannah backs up her, what was at the time, shock win of 7 weeks ago. I think they'll move outdoors now as the cold snap that has caused them to play indoors so far moves away this morning.
