Week 43 - ITF W100 Wrexham, Great Britain - Hard (Indoor)

We even have the presence of Anne K as well as yesterday's bigwigs.
Adam and Katie O'Brien are working with Mimi.

Ella has her own male coach. Alicia a female coach

Alice was very disappointing in the bits I saw. Overpowered and lots of basic errors.

Alicia's coach is Sam Mannix. She was an assistant coach at University of Florida in Alicia's last 2 years there and guided Alicia to her doubles NCAA semi-final last year.

Very inconsistent. Ella was more solid, but will struggle against better players.

Nice win for Ella. One of my favourites. Good to see her join up with Mimi again in the doubles. Play well together. Hope that ankle is ok though.

Ruby broke to serve for the match vs Lily! Broken back to 15 though.

Ruby leads 6-3 5-5*

Certainly hadn't anticipated such a decisive scoreline between the two  ( 6-3 6-1 to Ella )

TB. I did see that Ruby saved at least one SP.

Mimi is a set down. Very close match. The 7th game went to at least 10 deuce points.

She is playing the number 3 seed ranked over a hundred places above her. I think we are maybe starting to see the difference between a w100 and the w35 last week. Some sweet draws for some GB women but others like Mimi and Mika are much tougher in Wrexham.

Ruby came back from 2-6* down, saving in all a further 5 SPs in the TB, but Lily takes the set in the end.

6-3 6-7(7)

There isnt much of a gap and Mimi was the favourite at the start of the match with the bookies

That was some match - 2h 30 mins and Ranah lost by the narrowest of margins.
The levels from both players were exceptional.

Not seen Ranah for a few years, but if she plays like that, she will be a top 250 player in no time.

Unfortunately that has been the story for the last three or four years now

She always plays like that and she never gets to be top-250

I still have her in my top-10 most years as she has SO much talent

But I've heard that she has a lot of problems with finding the right coach, the bigwigs at the NTC don't really rate her ..... it's such a shame

But at least she was being watched, so maybe..

Indeed - I know there are some who bat for her, thankfully - but at least one person, in particular, who has a real downer on her

Needless to say, I don't like the downer person who shall remain nameless (although not really)

Very interesting. To my mind it is players with a very good top level, while maybe inconsistent, who should really interest bigwigs, and they should try to help and get behind that player to help them be all they can be. That too logical, too sensible? Maybe too challenging for some?

Ooh. Never listen to them TBH! Mimi has a good position now in the second, but still a way to go. She fell away badly in the third set in the quarters at Birmingham so hopefully she can put in a better third set if it goes that far today.

Ruby *3-5 down to Lily in the third set, having just got one break back.

Just watching a little I am impressed by Ruby's movement. A real scamperer!
