Week 43 - ATP 500 - Vienna, Austria (indoor hard)

Theyd played 3 times already this season 8 sets to 0 and 6 of those 6-4. So thats a good step up from Jake, no cigar as CD says, but a much better performance

Jake did so well to keep that tiebreak alive

But he was always behind

And Zverev played some more front foot tennis than he often does

SO close - but no cigar

... unfortunately yes front foot to the end on his 4th MP with that final low volley dispatched nonchantly, my shouts of "miss!" evidently having no effect.

This was a great follow-up year after his breakthrough season. He has competed well on the tour; lots to improve on, but he belongs here firmly. Excited to see what happens next.

Contenders for the doubles race falling like flies in Basle and Vienna - Bolelli and Vavassori; ERV and Nys; Harrison and King. The Germans, Krawietz and Putz are effectively qualified without playing this week; Doumbia and Reboul could get in contention if they can have a good week in Vienna. Why they chose Vienna though, Basle same points and a weaker field for sure.

Must have been leaves on the line. Lost the set on a tiebreak.

Got to grips with it, then, as he took the second in a tie break - both tie breaks have been long ones, looks like a close one in the offing!

Over 3 hours gone now. No breaks in the third as we steam ahead towards the final destination.
