Arthur played really well in that first set, Sonego just upped his level at 4-4 to break which took the wind out of Arthur's sails. He wasn't far away and clearly has the game and talent to be much higher.

6 double faults already from Fearnley. Loses set 6-2 and thats a fair reflection

Thought he was getting his mojo back after the last round. Hopefully tonight was just a one off, he didn't look too well.

Towards the end of the year, perhaps not too well (?) after a previous good win - so the ability seems to be there.

Hopefully reset well in the off season after that difficult second album, I mean season. Pity but not a biggie to my mind.

I just think Ymer (either Ymer) is someone Jake should be beating. If he wasnt well, he shouldnt play. Get out on court and your fit. He should beat someone whos game is mercurial / fragile and who he is generally more solid than- or should be.

Applying your thoughts on when people should or should not appear on court doesn't change the fact that he may not have been too well.

Though in fact it is really his R1 win ( and paulisi saying that Jake played really well ), indicating that the ability is still there, even if for whatever reason(s) not always produced, that makes me relatively unconcerned. He would beat Ymer most of the time.

Hope youre right - Jakes downturn has been going on a while now, hope he turns it around for 26.

I watched the end of the first and the beginning of the second set. He looked like someone who was resigned to losing as opposed to someone who was trying his damnest to recover and win. And his team mirrored this. Last night he had flashes of a level above Ymer but otherwise a fair amount of lacklustre play.

I agree with the assessment that he may have been unwell or injured in some way. But perhaps after his performance in the previous round, unless badly injured or severely unwell, perhaps he felt well enough to get on court, if not 100%

I'm hoping the previous performance is an indicator of the future

Let's hope so, Indy and Boothy. Jake clearly has done extremely well to rise up the rankings so rapidly and I may be harsh on him; he is still our third highest ranked player and top 100 (comfortably) and I am sure it will come back. But something hasn't been right, for whatever reason, with his game since before the Wimbledon. Whether it is pressure (he talked about nerves impacting his serving a month or two back, I recall) leading to anxiety, loss of confidence etc or something else ailing him.

He is lined up for Vienna qualies this weekend, as things stand, and then Paris qualies (6th alt currently) and then it looks like Athens qualies after that. I guess if there is an injury or illness we might not see him in Vienna, so let's look out for that when the draw gets released later today (presumably?)

I also see Billy and Jan aren't entered into anything this next week beyond seeing if the fields drop away for Basle and Vienna qualies, which looks unlikely. Both will have a fallow week, unless a wild card into some challenger comes their way? Jan has been doing well and probably doesn't need to play, from a match fitness point of view, but it will seem strange to see Billy with a week off!!
