Weeks 40 & 41 - ATP Masters 1000 - Shanghai, China (hard)

And an all cousin final it is. Truly extraordinary.

Wow re that final - that is fascinating but also going to be so hard for the family. Imagine reaching your first big final for both of them and playing a cousin!?

So Valentin Vacherot has won 7 matches this tournament.  Extraordinary!

8   ( including one retirement when he was 6-0 3-1 up )

Sorry, I'm not very good at counting!  And the win by retirement absolutely counts. I so hope that he extends this winning streak. This is a story that gets tennis in the news.

I edit this post to protest against the headline on the ATP website "ailing Djokovic". This is disrespectful.

It's certainly caught the Beeb's eye.  The report notes that NoDjo received medical treatment "on several occasions".  Time he threw in the towel.

They'll say it's brilliant ( which in so many ways it is ) but would Valentin in particular maybe have preferred the final without this 'complication'?

SF of all 4 Slams this year. That towel won't be getting thrown in any time soon unless his body truly can't take it any more over the longer term.

Tennis story of the year, maybe of several years. Since Emma won the US Open?

They are obviously deliberately making it too hot for human safety in order to stop Sinner - Alcaraz finals.

Just for info

Arthur Rinderknech's mum is Virginie Paquet (as was)

And so Chloe Paquet is also a cousin (although once removed, I think)

I'm supporting Arthur in this one

Valentin, for me, is a clay courter - and a rather grumpy one often

I also, in general, will always support the French over the French who play for Monaco (although I know that Valentin grew up very close and hasn't just hopped over to suit)

And so the underdog wins the title .. of course not underdog any more

That was painful

Arthur could barely move in the third set

He couldn't even bend down

Valentin looked fresher, and all credit to him for keeping going

I liked the way he came to the net more than normal - a smart move considering the conditions

Arthur, of course, often comes in, anyway

Well, overall, I don't think it'll have been a high point in the ATP's year

Fair enough, on the grounds of being grumpy but also to be fair, he was born about 2 miles from Monaco so you're right he's not just moved down to Monaco for the money.

I disagree. Has attracted far more coverage than a Sinner versus Fritz might have. Yes Shanghai was the tennis equivalent of Survivor, but what great stories. And the ATP might finally even introduce a heat rule, which they weren't going to do without bodies on court. Fortunately still alive.

Agreed, whatever the reasons and quality of tennis, its been the tennis story of the year, in terms of accessing the non tennis world

If he's a clay courter it's even more remarkable. Are there any theories (other than he's used to hot weather) as to why it's such an exceptional result?
