Weeks 40 & 41 - ATP Masters 1000 - Shanghai, China (hard)

Arevalo and Pavic lost their semi today, meaning Lloyd stays as number one and Lloyd and Julian keep top of the Race by a decent distance - they should keep it through until Paris for sure.

I see that Rinderknech beat Felix AA in straight sets so the cousins are into the SF!!

Djokovic vs Vacherot
Medvedev vs Rinderknech

It will be interesting.

Arguably the pair of the year has been Granollers & Zeballos, 3rd in the race on 6325 points from relatively few tournaments, for whatever reasons ( age? - they are 39 and 40 ). Does include 4720 points from the 3 Slams they played ( French Open and US Open titles and Wimbledon SF ).

Valentin will serve for the first set, he leads Djoko 5-3.

Djoko had a MTO earlier, but that doesn't indicate his state of health accurately.

Djoko taking an MTO is exactly unusual, esp in a close match.  1-1 in the second set.  Djoko's service hold was a moderately long game

So Valentin Vacherot has won 7 matches this tournament.  Extraordinary!

Vacherot beats Djokovic 6-3 6-4

So far he is showing as up 146 ranking places to live ranked 58. Should go to WR 40 if he wins the final. His CH is 110 from June last year.

While I hate these 2 week Masters, it does provide an opportunity for someone ranked 200 to sneak into qualifying and then have a dream week.

The qualifying drawsheet shows the last direct acceptance as being Beibit Zhukayev 207. Vacherot's entry ranking was 205.

Would be wonderful if he gets to play his cousin in the final! Got to support that happening!

Sorry, I'm not very good at counting!  And the win by retirement absolutely counts. I so hope that he extends this winning streak. This is a story that gets tennis in the news.

I edit this post to protest against the headline on the ATP website "ailing Djokovic". This is disrespectful.

I hope he gets wildcard entries into Basle/Paris/Metz out of this. Surely the Swiss and French would look well on a Monaco player?

It would be commercial insanity for tournaments in the coming weeks to deny him wildcards.
