Week 38 - WTA500 - Seoul, Korea Hard

Emma seemed to move progressively from attack to defence as the match progressed. The aggression that we have seen in Emma's improved play in recent matches was not so evident today.

OK, a useless stat now. But hey if Emma had won she would have been one of only 2 players Iga would have played more than twice this year. It would have been their 3rd meeting and Iga has also played Rybakina 4 times. She's played loads of players twice this year

I'm trying to work out what people are meaning by these comments. Is the sarcasm an attempt at irony, or are the comments just nasty. I'm not sure.

My comment was genuine that I wondered if Emma might have felt stress re the BJK Cup and that is what came out.

my other comment re being generous of spirit was one of self deprecation, call it irony if you like? Nothing else.

Being frank, I dont think I have ever done nasty here, and seldom in my life. So please dont take it that way.

Thanks for making that clear. I didn't take it that way. I was genuinely unsure of what folks meant when making sarcastic comments. Emma does seem to exhibit confidence swings, like many tennis players, reflecting her emotions. I think it is entirely possible that she is worrying about what people think about her decision over BJK Cup. She has made the correct decision about playing the Seoul tournament rather than the BJK event, just as every player involved in BJK made their correct decision.

While I don't want to see her upset, I do think she should be concerned about what people think about her decision and also how it was done. It has left a sour taste.

I still want her to win games and tournaments, but if she's playing Boulter, Kartal or Jones or most other Brits then I would prefer them to win which wasn't the case before she withdrew.

I see Var was wondering if it was Emma's decision not to play in the BJK Cup Finals?

Right or wrong, I would hope that it was, for if it wasn't, to my mind that's a big problem and something she should be sorting out asap. She is past an age that anyone else should be deciding such a thing for her that so affects her and others. And folk are going to judge her ( as to an extent on here ) so she should certainly own such a decision. Who knows but I have long been a bit concerned about these in the background.

I agree Indiana, and I think nearly everyone on this forum only wants Emma to achieve her potential moving forward. She has a good chance now to move forward and even after that defeat, with Roig in her corner I think he can pull her back. Wishing her all the best on the Asian swing this year.

QF:- Tereza Mihalikova (SLO) / Olivia Nicholls (GBR) CR66 (35+31) [3] v Hao-Ching Chan (TPE) / Clara Tauson (DEN) CR113 (25+88)

They lost to Tauson+ in Cincinnati and Roland Garros - but beat Chan+ in Dubai in February. Chan and Tauson aren't a regular partnership but make a strong pair.
