Week 37 - ITF W35 Wagga Wagga, Australia - Hard

A great result to wake up to .. Really pleased for Katie. Like others I was expecting either a win or injury.

A win is a win, but I hope it is W50 or W75 tournaments she can now find after the coming week, to increase the rate of her rise up the rankings, as she's been able to beat those in the 200-300 range for some months now.

Nevertheless, the goal for the year was to play matches without injury. And so far she has achieved that. How many players will achieve their goals for 2025 I wonder? Maybe just one.

Irrespective of who wins the player of season, if Katie achieves her goal, she will be my stand-out player, in a year which brought me Fran achieving Top 100, and Emma back to being as good as ever, and Jack top 5 in the world.

Keep it going Katie!!

Katie wins in straight sets

Another one never really in doubt.

My 'problem' with nominating Katie is that this level is so beneath what she is capable of that I don't really feel it's much of an achievement when she wins a tournament.  I fully expected to wake up to her winning this title subject to injury problems.

If she hasn't made it onto the PoS list by December, I will nominate her for starting the year with 1 point and shooting up the rankings.  She's still had her injury issues this year but if all goes well over the next 3 months, she'll be in AO qualifying.

Makes sense and understand the logic; hopefully she will get in one way or another and the wildcard vote is designed to sort that out !

Thanks Boothy, lets hope that whatever happens, Katie has a sustained run of fitness and, off the back of that, form.

I agree with the mention of Fran, Emma and Sonay as the others who have had the best season so far.

I think Fran rising so confidently into the top 100 is amazing and she has improved season by season consistently.

Sonay has amazed lots of us on here, who doubted whether she had the game to mix it with the top 100 players, and she has improved her all round game this season, I think, and also showed a great temperament and tenacity.

It is also lovely to see Emma really pushing towards the top echelons of tennis, and the fact that she looks to be finishing the season inside the top 32 is a major achievement.

So my throw away comment about Katie S maybe being the player of the season was based that in January she had just one ranking point and it really looked very iffy in terms of whether her tennis career would continue at all, or whether after numerous injuries and the loss of all but one of her ranking points she would say enough is enough - instead, she has got back in the top 400, which I think is a major turn around for her.

I would also add two other names who have done well - Mingge Xu and Hannah Klugman - both have begun to establish themselves as players and have made solid progress this season.

Anyway I am happy Katie has done so well - for me it would be a close call between Katie, Fran and Emma for my female player of the season, and I wouldn't object to any of those getting the best vote. I'm not a fan of a mixed player of the season vote on here - I feel that the men' and women should be 2 separate categories, but I will probably vote for someone anyway.

Anyhow all the best to Katie and to every Brit.

Hi Andy - thanks for the comments and understand your view , I think youve expressed it before. I always consider changes in this and the other regular competitions/votes, for now (this year) we are one big happy family of a vote!

Well done Katie Swan, a comprehensive win in the W35 Wagga Wagga tournament final. No sets dropped throughout the competition, which is important in keeping wear and tear to a minimum. Very good serving stats in the final, an indicator that the Swan team has found a way to keep Katie fighting fit. The serve is such a weapon when everything is aligned, and has improved significantly this last year or two with the addition of slice to take it away from the opponent. Six opportunities to break the serve of Preston, five taken. The focus and the know how. It's all happening.

Well done Katie!

I do so miss the days when groups of players would head out for long swings in Aus and East Asia ITFs...

Our ladies seem to have had a particularly good week this week. Counting both singles and doubles I make it three titles and four Semi finals, when a few QFs is more the norm.

Tbf even just a few days ago, it was being pointed out that we had 17 men and just 4 women singles quarter finalists this week ( and actually on further analysis that that unfortunately wasn't below par for our ladies this year ).

But yes, well done for the success at the sharp end of the week, and it's actually 4 titles - Katie here, Naiktha doubles in France, and Alicia both singles and doubles in Tunisia ( ultimately in total equalling the men's 4 singles titles )

Ah, I forgot that Alicia won the doubles as well as the singles.
