Week 37 - ITF W35 Wagga Wagga, Australia - Hard

This is a great win for Katie - some very helpful ranking points for her and another Aussie to face in the final - Taylah Preston. I think you could argue now, that she is having the best season of all the British women.

The live rankings site has gone a bit haywire - it hasn't got her still active in the tournament. I make it though that she now has 139 points, which puts her just inside the top 400. It is heartening to see her that high again.

Katie 6-4 7-6(8)

Katie went 3-0 down in the 2nd, broke twice to go 4-3 up, serving for the match at 5-4 she double faulted to lose her service. In the tie break she went 6-3 up, got pegged back, got a 4th match point and double faulted, saved a set point and finally got over the line on her 5th match point.

This is a great result. I feel this is her best result since she began her comeback. Playing someone of a good level, falling behind in the 2nd and coming back from that, then falling behind in the tie-break and then turning that around too .. just great

When she came back she was having flashes of playing in the 200-300 level, but she's able to lift her level higher.

Just great!! SO pleased for her biggrin

I think Sonay and Fran are trying to say hello.

Nonetheless, good to see folks getting excited - I dont know anything about Katie or her backstory, although can see shes talented and been v much injured (and sat behind her on a train last summer) and hope this continues for her.

Katie Swan has the highest ceiling after Emma. If Emma didn't already have a Slam I'd put them level.

Yes, I think Emma is saying hello too. Great win from Katie and in context she is doing really well all things considered. But simply having the best season of all the British women, well no!

Re certainly the live-tennis ranking site, there does indeed seem something very amiss re tournament involvement this week, and some points are wrong, eg. no tournament showing for Victoria Allen  who should be adding 12 points for France W75 ( so 67 points rather than 55 )

At least for now, Katie's live ranking points are right at 116 since W35s only add in a week on Monday but I am pretty sure the site does normally show W35 involvement even if the points aren't adding this week? Hopefully in next week's live rankings she will be adding 35 title points.

Re her live ranking, her live ranking points for this coming Monday are still 116 since she is not involved in a tournament that adds points on the following Monday ( W50s and above ).

Once Monday's rankings are declared, next week the live ranking sites will show the points from here, currently yes 23 for a 139 total. Let's hope by then it is 35 for a 151 total.

And, of course, if Katie is to be in the conversation for player of the season, she needs to be in the vote at the end of the year!

And to be in the vote she needs to qualify and, to do that, she needs to first get into player of the month

https://britishtennis.activeboard.com/t72134616/british-tennis-forum-september-2025-player-of-the-month-awar/?page=3

I reckon she is having a decent week this week, so if anyone thinks she does deserve to be in the conversation, follow the link above and get her on the list. For starters, there are no women on it yet, so at the least she would be leading the way in the September conversation for our women.

Go on, Andy or Emmsie, or anyone else - give it a go!!

She is having a very decent week indeed!!

Re my previous post, I have largely edited it because while yes Katie's live ranking points are right, when I went and had a look at the live-tennis site ( I am guessing that's what Andy was looking at ), some players' tournament involvement is indeed being missed and such as Victoria Allen ( no mention of her France W75 ) actually missing points that are due to add in on Monday.

For once OER looks to be more up to date than live-tennis.eu, with the points mentioned above showing in the right places.

Indeed. That would do the job; but a nice vote in one of the PoMs would be so much nicer!

I agree with the mention of Fran, Emma and Sonay as the others who have had the best season so far.

I think Fran rising so confidently into the top 100 is amazing and she has improved season by season consistently.

Sonay has amazed lots of us on here, who doubted whether she had the game to mix it with the top 100 players, and she has improved her all round game this season, I think, and also showed a great temperament and tenacity.

It is also lovely to see Emma really pushing towards the top echelons of tennis, and the fact that she looks to be finishing the season inside the top 32 is a major achievement.

So my throw away comment about Katie S maybe being the player of the season was based that in January she had just one ranking point and it really looked very iffy in terms of whether her tennis career would continue at all, or whether after numerous injuries and the loss of all but one of her ranking points she would say enough is enough - instead, she has got back in the top 400, which I think is a major turn around for her.

I would also add two other names who have done well - Mingge Xu and Hannah Klugman - both have begun to establish themselves as players and have made solid progress this season.

Anyway I am happy Katie has done so well - for me it would be a close call between Katie, Fran and Emma for my female player of the season, and I wouldn't object to any of those getting the best vote. I'm not a fan of a mixed player of the season vote on here - I feel that the men' and women should be 2 separate categories, but I will probably vote for someone anyway.

Anyhow all the best to Katie and to every Brit.

Another one never really in doubt.

My 'problem' with nominating Katie is that this level is so beneath what she is capable of that I don't really feel it's much of an achievement when she wins a tournament.  I fully expected to wake up to her winning this title subject to injury problems.

If she hasn't made it onto the PoS list by December, I will nominate her for starting the year with 1 point and shooting up the rankings.  She's still had her injury issues this year but if all goes well over the next 3 months, she'll be in AO qualifying.

For the record

F: Katie Swan(GBR) WR445 [4] DEF Tayla Preston (AUS) WR 259 [2] 6-1 6-2

Actually more comprehensive that I expected. Excellent week, roll on next week.

This is a tremendously heartening win. Katie is now beginning to put herself in a position where she can have a real go at making the top 100 next year. She has another tournament here, so hopefully she can get some more points, but these points will really help her re-establish herself as a top player. Regardless of the level, there are plenty of players here who are either of a good standard, including her last 2 opponents, and others who are young and hungry for success - it isn't easy to win tournaments like this, especially in beating 2 good Aussies in the semi and final.
