The Paskauskas sisters were reunited last night with I believe their parents also taking the opportunity to visit. It was the first time in their collegiate careers that they were on opposing sides in the same fixture, albeit on adjacent courts presenting a unique set of challenges.
"Having [my sister] as a teammate last year at NC State was such a great experience," Gabia explained after the match. "I don't think anything can top being on the same team as your sibling. But obviously now it's different because we're playing against each other and that's really difficult because there are lots of emotions. I want her to do well. She wants me to do well. It was a very weird dynamic on court today playing next to her but not on the same team.
"I was playing my point, but my mind was over on her court as well. I definitely need to work on my focus (laughs). I wouldn't say it completely affected me, but I would say the focus aspect, my mind kind of being on two courts, it was a little bit difficult to deal with that. And also seeing her go down in the match and then up in the match. It's a little bit of a game of emotions for sure. [Associate Head Coach Axel Damiens] kind of got me to come back, and he just told me to keep my eyes on my court and focus on what I need to do, and he gave me tactics and just to stick on to those."
Florida got a roasting after doubles
"[After doubles] we actually went to the very end court in the corner, and me and [teammate] Scarlett [Nicholson] said to each other 'Gosh, we're going in the naughty corner here.' He was strict, but he always wants the best for us, so he just told us to kind of regroup, refocus and get onto our doubles with loads of energy as a team, pumping each other up."
1 #60 India Houghton (UF) unf. #73 Kristina Paskauskas (ALA) 6-3, 5-2 3 #39 Gabia Paskauskas (UF) def. Maria Andrienko (ALA) 6-4, 6-1 4 #123 Brooke Black (UF) unf. #98 Karla Bartel (ALA) 6-0, 5-7, 2-1
It's the first time Brooke has not completed her match. She's 9-3 in singles. Gabia has won 4-1 since losing to Ella at the beginning of the month. Kristina is struggling at No 1 against the top players in the SEC. Since conference matches started mid Feb she has 2 wins, 4 losses and 2 unfinished in which she was behind.
Brooke and her doubles partner are finding it difficult at No 2 doubles in conference play with only 1 win in their last 7. It's perhaps time to try a different partnership or move them down. Florida could do with the abovementioned Scarlett in doubles (who partnered Kylie Bilchev last year) but she's ineligible after transfering mid season having already played representing her previous school.
...
A strange match at Utah (Kamea Medora) with at first glance an eyebrow raising 4-0 win over Oklahoma State. And then you see why. OKSU only had 4 available players forfeiting a doubles and 2 singles. Starting singles 3-0 down, they then injury retired at No 1 after 4 games of the first set. If OKSU only have 3 players available going forward I can see them following men's UT Arlington (Finbar Mc Garvey) in cancelling the rest of the season.
You're right Jon. Brooke is higher than Gabia by WTA ranking, by WTN and when Brooke joined in January I heard she had the best UTR on the team. I think the order is partly because when the initial positions were decided in January, Gabia was the highest ITA ranked player on the team after a successful fall season (and still is) and Brooke was new to college tennis and finding her feet. I half expected Brooke to move above Gabia as the season has gone on but, apart from a blip at the end of Feb, Gabia hasn't given the coach much reason to do that to my surprise. And sometimes its strategic. If you can get away with playing a player out of order then you've virtually got a guaranteed point on the board.

Going 4-0 up for the loss of 2 points (both errors) and her opponent offering nothing it looked like she was on the way to a bagel first set. Instead she was hidden bageled. And then she didn't lose another game. Hep didn't play. She usually plays No 1 doubles but didn't in this match and hasn't played singles for a couple of weeks.
