In the womens match of the day Ohio State beat NC State 5-2 No joy for either Hep or Jasmine in doubles and Jasmine got NC State's only singles win beating Hep at No 6. Flora didn't play either doubles or singles as Ohio State tried new doubles pairings after a disappointing doubles showing last week.
6: Jasmine Conway (NC State) d. Hep Oluwadare 7-6 (6) 6-4
After the womens team reaching the final and the mens team being your tournie favourites, Ohio State looks like it has the strongest overall programme this year?
You got me thinking there Jon. Yes, at the moment they are but we'll see whether they are come the end of the season. There are not many universities with top teams whose athletic departments put roughly the same resource into their mens and womens tennis programs. Of those that do, Stanford should be strong but are perineal underachievers, Texas' women's program is strong on paper but are young and inexperienced at college level, Virginia's womens program is slightly weaker this year. LSU have strengthened their mens program this year but we're missing key players on both mens and womens in the indoor championships so we'll see where they are when at full strength.
Ohio State living dangerously with another 4-3 comeback win. Okonkwo lost his doubles set. They'll play either Virginia or Mississippi State in the semi-final.
TCU's run of 4 consecutive indoor finals comes to an end as they lose 4-3 to rivals Texas. Oli lost 4-6 7-6(2) 4-6
The defending champs are out. Baylor d. Wake Forest 4-3. What a day.
D1: Koenig/Van Schalkwyk (Baylor) lost to Suresh/Delgado (WF) 3-6 D3: Pow/ Robertson (WF) d. Anderson /Badenhorst (Baylor) 6-4
S3: Luca Pow (WF) lost to Van Schalkwyk (BU) 4-6 4-6 S5: Charlie Robertson (WF) lost to Luc Koenig (BU) 6-1 5-7 6-7 (3) S6: Louis Bowden (BU) lost to Guilleme (WF) 4-6 5-7
The match was won on court 1 with Devin Badenhorst (BU) beating DK Suresh (WF) in a 3rd set tie break. There was speculation Luca may be carrying an injury.
Charlie defeated Oli 6-4 7-6(4). Luca lost in 3. Wake Forest won 4-3.
Away from the Indoor Championships, Georgia played a couple of easy matches today against the same low standard opposition. Will Jansen won both his doubles and his 1 singles match he played. Derrick Chen was unfinished in his 1 singles match he played.
Lots of men's teams of interest have no matches this weekend as they probably expected to be playing at the Indoor Championships.
On the women's side Ohio State opened up their Conference program with a 5-2 win at Penn State. Flora won her doubles playing with Nao Nishino but lost singles 5 & 1 at No 5. Hep didn't play. It looks as though Ohio State have a fixed top 4 and are rotating between 3 or 4 players at singles 5 & 6.
Jasmine Conway got a 5 & 2 singles win as NC State swept Michigan 7-0 in Michigan. I'm pleased that Jasmine is getting some regular singles action even if that is only because NC State only have 6 available players plus a local that, going by their WTN, is far below the standard required.
UCF travelled to Miami and won 4-2. Hannah Rylatt (UCF) won her doubles but retired during the 2nd game in singles with what looked like a knee injury. Jacqui Ogunwale has yet to play for Miami this year. She is dressing but not playing so not sure whether she's injured or not being selected.
Dani Piani has yet to play for South Carolina this year. She is in attendance for matches but not dressing, suggesting she is unavailable for selection.
Talia Neilsen-Gatenby (Clemson) played 2 doubles sets and 3 singles matches this weekend winning all her doubles and 2 of her singles, with the other singles unfinished, all against fairly low opposition.
For many teams the serious action of Conference play starts next weekend.
The Men's Indoors final will be between Ohio State and Texas.
Ohio State beat Virginia 4-2. Alex Okonkwo with partner Bernard have had a terrible championships so far going 0-3. Will they be given another go in the final? It'd be a surprise. Texas are looking strong this weekend and OSU will need the doubles.
Texas had an easy 4-0 win over Baylor. Louis Bowden lost in straight sets. Luc Koenig was battling back after losing the 1st set and was unfinished on-serve early in the 3rd.
Alex did play doubles and was on set point 6-5* in the tie-break when Texas claimed doubles on the other courts. He also got to play singles which he won against #51 Seb Eriksson 7-6(1) 6-2
