Week 34 - US Open - Flushing Meadows, New York, NY, USA (hard) - QUALIFYING

It looks quite blustery which I don't believe would be Jodie's ideal normal conditions, but she's keeping it together (and in court) more often than not. Rus really doesn't have anything to fear as long as Jodie keeps that mindset and form.

Fails to convert 40-0* to keep the second set alive

7-6(4) 4-6 *0-0

Just one poor service game there.

Comes through a mammoth game at 3 all.

Ahhhh Jodie seemed to struggle with her fitness a lil bit towards the end - but from what I saw she was at least playing better than she has in a while (lack of first serve aside)

Rus was getting everything back and made very few mistakes in the final set.

Funny, I was thinking how many shots Rus fluffed - it was really close in the middle of that third set, great shot-making and lots of fluffs from both, I thought - Rus could easily have broken her a game earlier if she'd got the ball over the net on a few key occasions. But Jodie was playing well, just a touch slow to adjust at times

When the main draw was made there were no lucky losers spots. Remains to be seen if there are any before the main tournament actually starts.

Some players will probably wait until the last minute before withdrawing, hopefully Fran won't need a LL spot anyway.

Harriet is not at her happiest today (shock)

Harriet lost. She was having a lot of problems serving in the windy conditions. She called the trainer on and left the court for what looked like a shoulder problem.

Harriet had 5 set points in a mammoth game at *5-4 in the first set. Normally I'd say it was a disappointing loss but it was very consistent with how her year has gone.

Harriet's tennis is in a deep hole at the moment. I do wonder if that incident with Boisson has had a deeper and longer lasting affect than perhaps we think it might have done. She did win a match here in which she showed her fighting qualities but she's hardly won any matches since that incident and pretty much looks to be mentally struggling at times. Even in the match she won here there was a point in the second set where she lost a game that she let out an almighty ear piercing scream which was actually quite upsetting to watch. Her current ranking will also take a hit as she will be net -50 points for the US Open which will take her down to around 260-265 in the ranking. I do wonder if an extended break away from the game just enjoying life for a few weeks and then returning in the autumn to play in some higher level ITF events to try and regain some positivity and confidence might not be a good move.

Good luck to Fran today. She has a good chance of making it through I think.
