Week 34 - US Open - Flushing Meadows, New York, NY, USA (hard) - QUALIFYING

That was a good set of tennis from both players. Nice to see Harriet still going for her shots despite the long run of losses and she's redirecting the ball pretty nicely odd the pace. Serve has been okay so far which is better than usual.

Harriet led 4-1 *30-0 in the second set. Romanian totally freed up with her back to wall and now suddenly looks very dangerous again.

*4-3

Harriet drops serve again from *30-15 and this is going south quickly.

Harriet misses six break points in a brutally long game. 5 were saved excellently and she could do nothing about.

Doesn't make her feel any better though, and I rather suspect the match was in that game. You can see the belief starting to evaporate.

Quickly down *0-30. Game point. Deuce. Holds.

Clung on there. 5-5*

Her emotional outbursts and self loathing mid match make her a hard watch for me. Tough to actively root for someone when they don't look like they're rooting form themselves. The beating the racquet over her own head was different for sure. Todoni's weight of shot looking like it will prove too much - I hope I'm wrong of course.

Harriet holds from *15-30 to get to the tiebreak.

Hev underway and *2-0 up. I'd forgotten how horrible (and delayed) Gorgodze's grunt was.

Harriet loses the tiebreak 7-3. Todoni played it very well.

I do feel for Harriet. She looks like she's being subjected to torture. I don't think she actually did much wrong from 4-1 *30-0. I don't feel she got tight, or started missing. It's just Todoni was never really out of it, indeed both of Harriet's breaks Todoni had been game point up. So whereas Tig basically handed Jodie the second set yesterday (which I remain delighted about), this Romanian just kept digging in.

I can't see this third set going any way other than quickly sadly. Harriet looks like she wants the ground to swallow her up.

Painful watch but Heather drags herself over the line 6-3. Thankfully sealed on the backhand side as the forehead had gone to pushtown.

Harriet breaks for *4-2 but quickly down break points.

Gosh all those demons in her brain I can't imagine it. She gets a match point, does everything right in a very good rally, and Todoni finds a bit of magic to just make the backhand pass.

She recovers to get a second but this time double faults.

5-4*

Todoni is really not giving her anything. She's having to work so hard but huge pressure now.
