Sad to see Fran have to qualify and Gadecki is in her section and is a good Aussie player - she often seems to win in the long matches and probably will be the happier of the two players in the forecasted heatwave there.
Potential match up in Round 2 of Fran versus Heather, too. Jodie is the only one in action tomorrow - first up on court against PM Tig at 4 pm UK time.
Like others say, I think Fran is our main hope here, but I'm not so sure it is that great a draw; lots of experienced players in her section like Gadecki, Hartono and Gogodze, and even her first round opponent, Hruncakova.
Hrunackova was until recently a regular in the early rounds of the Grand Slams - checking her record, the 27 year old has had 6 previous appearances in the first ound at the US Open and has appeared in the first round of the Grand Slams 18 times overall: she looks to be falling down the rankings now, but she should still provide a proper test for Fran, I'd have thought.
I thought Fran was three out at the end, how come she's top seed?
Presumably though she only needs to win two matches as she'd almost certainly get a LL place. That said I expected an easier draw, Heather would certainly raise her game if they meet.

Seeds are on current rankings; entry list was based on rankings at cut-off date.

Gadecki has only played two tournaments since Wimbledon and retired this week. Think it's a decent draw, and not unreasonable to have to beat those sort of players to qualify.

From what I know of the Lucky Losers slot, the top 4 ranked qualifiers who go out in the final qualifying round, then go into a random lucky draw and one is selected, so if one player withdraws, you only have a one in four chance of being selected. What I'm not sure about is if 2 players withdraw, whether they do a random draw which means 2 of the top 4 qualifiers get Lucky Loser slots or if after the first lucky draw, the fifth highest losing player then enters a one in four draw.
It's a bit difficult to explain this, but I think that is the process - so i don't think that losing in the final qualifying round in any way means the top seed is that certain to make the first round, and I guess the system is set up to avoid the top seed thinking 'well if I lose, I should get in anyway, as I'm sure at least one player will withdraw'. Any system based on that scenario would encourage players to not try too hard in final qualifying rounds or even throw matches, which I think is why the Grand Slams have this system in place.
Interesting on other posts about Gadecki - I've seen some of her televised matches, including the women's qualifying at Wimbledon and rate her as a gutsy competitor, not unlike Fran herself, but I am glad to hear she is in poor form, as she is in Fran's section of the draw.

The rules seem to be
"Lucky Losers are those players who have lost in the final round of the Qualifying competition or, if more Lucky Losers are required, those players who have lost in the previous qualifying rounds. Lucky Losers shall be selected based on the rankings used for the determination of qualifying seedings as follows: The order of the four (4) highest ranked players shall be randomly drawn, thereafter the order shall follow the players' rankings, unless there are more than two (2) main draw withdrawals at the time the Qualifying competition is finished in which case the size of the random draw will be the number of withdrawals plus two (2)."
I would have to say that does not seem to me to be entirely unambiguous but that is what the GS rule book suggests.
