Week 34 - WTA250 - Tennis in the Land, Cleveland USA - Hard

Fairly even match but Sonay a break down 3-4*

Not much in it. Sonay doesn't look as comfortable on the US hard courts really does she?

Really stepped it up a gear there in those final 3 games of the set. Did nicely to save the break point at *4-4 and that was a super point to take the set as well will a lovely lob after typically excellent defence. Hopefully she can keep this level up - it's still very close between them but she's edging more of the battles.

And now she is not. A double break down in the second. Looks a bit at sea again.

1-4*

Gets one break back, and saves a couple of set points to hold for 4-5*

For some reason, every single serve Sonay hits on the ad side is going to the exact same place. Sierra getting a lot of success with her shorter backhand cross return.

Sonay wastes multiple game points and broken to start the third.

0-1*

Breaks from 0-40* (eventually) and match has remained on serve.

4-3* and very even still.

Sonay has 30-15* at 5-4* but plays three poor points. Not entirely sure why she's still standing *so* far back. She could be much closer to the baseline in these rallies.

*5-5

Sonay loses 4-6 6-4 7-6(2)

Played a lot better than last week which is something to take forward, but she was still too passive for me throughout. Sierra was the one trying to make stuff happen and was rewarded at the end - Sonay played an absolutely 'nothing' tiebreak which was quite disappointing - middle of the box serves, everything very safe off the ground, then Sierra would inject some pace and the point was over. Didn't go after the match at the end at all. If I didn't know she had been, I'd be asking if she'd been working with JB...

Should have done far better with the huge opportunity at 5-4* in the third but really didn't step up. Let's see what the draw brings for New York, but this is the first sort of struggle Sonay has found herself on her meteoritic rise. Indeed, it's the first time she's lost 3 matches in a row since 2023. Let's see how she responds.

She earned £2,294 here and some practice before the US Open itself.

Very disappointing American swing for Sonay so far given she was a set up in both matches against beatable opponents, hopefully she'll get a kind draw next week.
