Week 34 - US Open - Flushing Meadows, New York, NY, USA (hard) - MIXED DOUBLES

I don't like this concept at all, I personally enjoy mixed doubles more than doubles. It's a more fun and often 'engaging' variation to normal tennis. And, like others have said, there are only 4 of these events every year. I get having bigger names playing boosts revenue but it feels like a really tacky, and very 'American' way of ruining a nice thing purely for more and more profit.

Delighted to see Errani and Vavassori win their opener against the #2 seeds. With proper seeding based on doubles ranking they might even have been top seeds themselves (haven't checked, but a doubles CR of 17 (4+13) ought to be enough)

 I was the opposite smile

I have no time for Errani, never really liked her, and find it hard to believe what she said

I'd have been very happy if she'd lost

I doubt long term legitimacy is at the forefront of the USTA's minds. They've written off the existing mixed doubles format, amd they see it as a focal point for US Open Fan Week. Or as we'll come to know it, Week 1 of a three-week Slam. Don't think there's any going back. We'll maybe Cincinnati will end on a Sunday in future.

The Beeb puts the arguments for & against the new all-singing, all-dancing format.  Mike Bryan quoted in its defence.  I can't say it floats my boat!  no

If Jack & Pegula beat Emma & Alcaraz, this thread will be moved back to the men's forum.

I was taken by Mr Bryan's comment:

"Fans want to see Djokovic, Alcaraz and Sinner even if they are brushing their teeth."

... which may explain why it has been decided to pander to those "fans", but are those people really tennis fans?

Personally I would much rather watch tennis than toothbrushing, regardless of whose teeth they are, and I would rather watch a tennis tournament than an exhibition: I can't be a fan.

All about the money - the stadiums look like they are sold out.

Emma and Carlos got smashed. Unsurprisingly perhaps, but looked like they had fun.

I watched Emma and Carlos. It was a fun event with some crazy points but the format was insane. Such short sets and resulting short matches means there is little chance of any tension building up which is one of the main features of tennis. I can't see it lasting in this format.

Jack and Jessica had a practice session together, Emma's practice was with Caroline Garcia today.
