Don't understand why Sky has taken to describing Cinci as the unofficial fifth Grand Slam. I thought that was IW...
It's definitely Miami (or atleast it was when it was at Crandon Park)
It was always Miami, when I was a lad. Then IW self proclaimed the same! and the media believed them as Miami decided a car park of a football stadium was a good venue!
now IW, Miami, Madrid, Rome, Canada and Cinci and Shanghai all have 96 draws, id say the offering is watered down and none of them deserve the title.
actually, Wiki says the prize money at Canada is the most, although I think they are wrong!
The other interesting news here, for me, is a) Saudi event looks like it will be watered down from a 96 players in mens and womens field, maybe a one week Masters event only? b) Rome has major ambitions and wants to take that fifth slot by becoming a 3 week event and possibly taking the Madrid license?!
Personally, I cant stand Madrid as an event, Rome is one I do love and, per a post from last week that I made, I would welcome Madrid falling away in the crowded clay court calendar, leaving Rome and Monte Carlo for the men.
The unknown factor here is that Miami and Madrid were sold to new owners earlier this year, and who knows what plans they have for them. I am very sceptical of the Italian Slam plan personally, and the talk earlier this year felt a little hubristic on the part of the Italian federation. I think an unlikely but underpriced scenario is that Miami, which feels increasingly untenable as a 1000 level tournament while it continues to be held largely in a car park that all the players seem to hate, gets sold to the Saudis and swaps position on the calendar with Indian Wells. It would solve a lot of the prospective issues, taking away a largely unloved tournament, and giving the Saudi's what they want without adding to the calendar's fixture congestion, but I'm sure a far less neat solution will be found...

This is a good point
And goes with my bit about Navarro's purchase of Cincinatti being a key part of the equation
It's obviously the owners, and the funds available, that play a big part in which WTA/ATP events will hold most clout, both directly and indirectly
If Joe & Neal would kindly beat Arevalo & Pavic, it would guarantee Lloyd becoming doubles WR 1 ( and Julian WR 2 ).
Although the only way Lloyd will not become WR 1 is if Arevalo & Pavic retain their title here and Lloyd & Julian don't make the final, it would be nice to get it done and dusted at this QF stage.
With Julian having played and lost R1 in Rome this year with a different partner and now having a mandatory 0 in his ranking they are going to have to wait until that tournament next year for their rankings to be become synced.
Technically if they do so badly in upcoming non mandatory events that Lloyd gets a 0 in his non mandatory counters they would be level on ranking points but Julian would have still played that extra tournament played which is the tiebreaker when you have equal points.
I guess in the above case Lloyd could play an extra tournament somewhere and deliberately lose R1 but that may get anti corruption on his case and also then the problem would work in the inverse after Rome next year.

I wonder if Julian regrets that week (day?!) in Rome!?
