Week 32 - W35 Southaven, USA - Hard

They're playing on. Two match points to Katie.

That delay certainly disrupted Katie's game. 8 points later Okamura finally holds serve.

Yep, and Katie is correct not to back down, it's the wrong behaviour and it needs to be sorted rather than let it happen again.

Not when your 5-0 and 40-15 up. It's enabled Okamura to regroup.

I assume we are talking properly hit rather than the infamous occasion ( in New Zealand? ) when Putintseva bounced her racket beside her, it took a few more bounces and ended up touching a ball boy at about 1 mph and Naomi Broady went off on one.

Nope she did slam it down about 2 metres from the line judge and it tapped his toe from what I could see. Katie should have left it alone when she was so much in the ascendancy.

ETA It was further than 2 metres, more like 4 or 5, anyway Katie has won so all is well but I had a moment where I thought she had let Okamura back in.

No, not properly hit - more like third or fourth bounce. Enough for a warning, not enough for a penalty.

But she looked in prime form today, hardly making any errors, quick to put the pressure on her opponent. Really good play at times.

Anyway I see Katie did win 6-3 6-1.

I missed the incident but I did see Katie moving extremely well about the court. Good to see.

Yes and no obvious signs that she was anything other than 100% fit which is so positive after a 3 hour match yesterday plus a doubles.

In fact, it seemed to me that Swan's game has become more complete, and it must be down to the work that she's been doing with her team in the US. There was a method evident in the shot selection, and the variety of them which Katie seemed comfortable playing. There was even an attempted lob, and a very accomplished exchange at the net.

L16:- Katie Swan (GBR) WR474 def Kyoka Okamura (JPN) WR214 [2] 6-3 6-1

(I even double-checked the rankings in case they were the wrong way round)

*****

QF:- Katie Swan (GBR) WR474 v Malaika Rapolu (USA) WR490

Relief and pleasure in equal measures - well done Katie - lost quite a lot of the match, as local computer problems here meant the live stream went down. Sounds like I missed the best bits.

Ah thanks, sounds a bit more than in the Naomi match but still possibly by common sense not a big penalty issue. Putintseva was in the middle of the court when she a bit irritatably chucked her racket ( certainly not slammed ) just to the side of her. It bounced in a random way that rackets can do and it meandered down to the ball boy at the back of the court.

I like Naomi, especially now as a pundit, but it was far from her finest monent. From memory I think she actually wanted Putintseva defaulted. Putintseva did get a warning which was the absolute most it deserved ( I'm fairly sure not a point penalty ) but whatever, was a bit perplexed and not happy.

It was a very young Ostapenko not Putintseva.

Thanks adz, sorrry about that. It had passed my mind was it Ostapenko ( some would say they have not dissimilar tendencies, though as I say this time it was something of nothing ) but I thought naa, it was Putintseva. Hey ho ...
