I wonder when they will make the main draw. Will they have to wait until the finalists at Montreal are known in case they have to leave space for them? That would mean leaving the draw until late afternoon tomorrow the day before play starts. That would be unusually late for a major WTA tournament.

They've done the men's singles draw already (posted on both the ATP and tournament websites). I would expect them to make the women's draw today.

I just checked the mens and it wasn't out. It's always the way, you ask the question and while you are asking the draw comes out. biggrin

She wasn't even on the entry list. Just in the right place at the right time to get an on-site entry.

Players outside the top 300 cant enter WTA1000s, so spaces in qualies can only go to on-site alternates who will usually be those there anyway for doubles.

Back in the day anyone could enter any WTA, so when you had late withdrawals you still had people in the 500-800 age sneaking in or knowing they were 1 or 2 out and making the trip. Now there's no way of knowing who else will sign in, so not worth the risk.

The main draw is now out. I will tidy it up later

R1: Olga Danilovic (SRB) WR 40 (CH 32 last month) Vs Katie Boulter WR 43 (CH 23 in Nov 2024 )
R1: BYE Vs (30) Emma Raducanu WR 30 (CH 10 in 2022)

R1: Sonay Kartal WR 48 (CH 44 last month) Vs (WC) Caroline Garcia (FRA) WR 199 (CH 4 in 2018)

Winner of the top match meets Emma in the next round. Emma could meet Leylah in R4.

Edited to add Sonay, thanks Gameover.

 Thanks

I'd assumed she was there for the doubles, seeing her ranking in dubs, but still thought it really weird that no one else was above her to enter for singles

But if that's the rule, and the net result is you get very lowly ranked-in-singles doubles players in the quali draw, with good money and good points, then that's a bit weird/a problem, tbh

There's another player there too who's outside the top-300 in singles but presumably there for doubles (Krunic)

It's be in top 500 to enter for Grand Slams, WTA 1000s and 500s.

That's an exceptional draw for Emma.

Not bad for Sonay in R1 either Vs a very nearly retired player.

Sorry yes you are right, don't know why I had 300 in my head - general point still stands.

Love how you've put winner could meet Leylah Fernandez in R4, glossing slightly over the fact that they'd have to have beaten Sabalenka in R3.

Raducanu should beat whoever she faces in round 2, however Sabalenka in R3 is an unfortunate roadblock.

Kartal probably has a higher chance of reaching round 4 with her draw.

Well it's all Emma Vs Leylah this and that isn't it? There was just a bunch of that commentary last week.
