31 minutes. Loses set and need toilet break. Call me a cynical old git but really this needs addressing in the women's game.

 Maybe she has her period.

Indeed and I fully accept that. I would add though that I don't often see women leave the court after winning the first set in a short time.

Back to the tennis, Katie is clearly struggling right now. Her game depends so heavily on her serve though and if that is missing, as it is, then she really has no strong back up plan.

She's made some honest comments about her game in recent weeks and maybe she needs a bit of a break from the game. perhaps after the US hard court swing she should take a few weeks off. But then tennis is so often a game of confidence and maybe she's just one good or lucky win away from getting that back.

Its much more likely that a woman loses a set due to being on her period than wins one, so not really indicative of gameswomanship.  I would suggest that if you are going to slap yourself across the face a few times out of frustration at your own performance.  Then its better to do it in private.

The player is not supposed to go off the court because she's lost, whether she's on her period or not

That's gamesmanship (although everyone does it)

A player on her period may absolutely need to go off the court after the first set, as Coco etc indicated, to get changed.. But that's nothing to do with whether they won or lost

Not disputing that its gameswomanship, just pointing out that Harry not having seen many set winners take a body break, is not evidence of it.

The toilet break seems to have been an issue since the 1990's with players  in those days  coming on court , having the knock up and then needing a toilet break. On a similar theme this year there was a player who on entering the court told the umpire they would be going off at the end of the 1st set to change their clothes.

I suggest mandatory drugs tests after each toilet break.

It might not have any relevance, but it may make players think twice about frivolous breaks.

I wasnt really reading anything into it, but actually Maya Joint is an exciting player to watch , when shes having a good day. But my post was really just remarking that someone I like had beaten someone for whom I still harboured some , I suppose dislike. i m not keen on her in the same way I was not keen on Serena when she was beaten by Naomi. Neither were gracious, to put it mildly.

Tbf, well at least in my opinion, Leylah was nowhere in the Serena scale and in fact I think didn't totally understand the Emma bleeding situation if you largely / partly mean her moans when Emma needed treatment at a crucial point near the end of their final

Naomi's winning experience was tarnished. Emma's certainly wasn't.

Thanks for engaging with this Indy.....  Yes, you are right, mild compared to Serene's unremitting outburst.  However, it did tarnish the joy of Emma winning for myself and  those watching with me.  Whether or not it affected Emma, it's hard to say.   I'm sure, as you say  Leylah  didn't understand quite what was going on with Emma's leg, but nevertheless was loudly  & frantically  protesting,  withins Emma's earshot, whilst she was being tended to.; and even  I think when preparing for the award ceremony she continued to harangue officials.  She seemed to be saying that the match had been turning in  her favour at that point  and because of the interruption  her chance was ruined.  Her  sad and sulky face was a presence throughout  much of the award  ceremony.  I understand also  that  for some time after  she was still pretty bitter about it all. She must have by then have watched the replay of what actually happened.   I never heard Emma comment negatively about Leyla's reaction publicly,  but she did make  a point, in an interview on BBC, about how the cut still had not closed up 2 weeks later, perhaps to emphasise the severity of the injury and fend off any  thoughts of  gamesmanship perhaps?  Anyway, yes, I'm sorry but Leyla's sustained   tirade  of complaining  was  very unattractive behaviour and, although I softened to her a bit watching her  winning  tough matches in Washington - I did find myself  slightly rejoicing in her losing 1st round Montreal. (Not a good look for me, that kind of thinking, I know, but I admit it).  ( I had already taken a shine to Maya Joint, whose Eastbourne matches I watched - I continued to like her even when she beat Emma !!)

Interesting reading all this while Norrie just takes a MTO at 6-5 in an important second set.
Comes back on and while it does go to a tie break, he absolutely dominates it and takes it 7-2.

Other than two sloppy second serve returns, Emma is playing A LOT better than her first round match. First set 6-2

Emma is starting to look like the player who shocked the world when she won the US Open and her results in the last few weeks bode well for another tilt at a major. An impressive 6-2 6-4 win tonight.

Emma served really well and got plenty of cheap points and really went after the second serve.
Stearns levels went up in the second set and really put Emma under pressure and was serving at 4-3 and then I fell asleep.....
