RE: Week 31 & 32 - WTA1000 Montreal, Canada - Hard

Wastes three game points with unforced errors and goes 1-5* down

Other than a period of about 15minutes in the second set this has been pretty amateurish. Very disappointing - not sure she could have had a better draw as a non-seed. Still only won 9 matches all season, needs to start building some results in these final couple of months with nothing to defend before everything drops off from October onwards.

Think she needs to drop down a few levels to get wins. Even if its W50 or W125.

Both very winnable but who knows with Katies form.

Im unsure as to why Jodie is playing these level events when she is barely winning matches. Her level is way off. Hopes she steps down to get some w8ns and gain some confidence before us open qualifying.

Like others are saying, it's difficult to predict Katie's performance as she seems to be suffering from confidence swings. Hope she brings her power tennis and doesn't over-think, but it might depend upon the weather .. For Emma, every week is breaking new ground .. and this tournament is another big step .. quick recovery from a physically demanding tournament, and from being outplayed by Kalinskaya.
She already knows she does not yet have the game to expect to beat top 10 players. But she is now a super-tough, strong willed player and a fast learner. If she can quickly have a good de-brief with her team (wherever they may be), and accept the semi-final loss then she can get to 3rd round.

I've been a little frustrated with Katie underselling herself this year. Her quotes have included comments that Sonay will overtake her at some point and that she may have to accept that she will never win a Grand Slam.

It feels like Katie herself thinks that she has reached her peak and she isn't going to improve much from here. I don't think she should think that is realism - she has made such strides over the previous couple of years that I don't think she should feel she has reached her max yet and I feel she really may be needing more positive vibes from those around her.

I think she does have the game to challenge the top players, but this year so far has been really disappointing for both her and her fans, and getting her head right and getting back her the competitiveness to improve that she had in the last two years may be the key to her getting better results. She is still young enough to improve and I feel her slim athletic physique should mean that it takes several years before she starts to slow - fingers crossed for her, but I want to hear her sounding more positive - I don't think she is mentally 100% in the right frame of mind right now, and for her results to improve, she needs to be mentally stronger.

Will Jodie not be able to use the protected ranking?

Jodie has been using her SR - but can only use it a limited number of times. Right now she needs winnable matches to get match practice and confidence.

I think you're right, but I also wonder if she has had something of a life reassessment. She's I think 29 and recently engaged - she'll have lots of friends marrying and changing their life stages from now onwards. I saw she posted Scotty Scheffler's press conference about the 'point' of the golf tour - it's quite easy at this stage of life to start to mentally move on when others around you do and I question if this is happening a little. Hopefully she still has a few more years in her though!

I completely agree that she needs to drop a level to get wins and confidence. I read somewhere else on the thread through that she needs to get some confidence before the US qualifiers. I thought she still had 1 SR left which would be used to get into the main draw, hence the question

If Emma reaches round 2 and Katie only reaches round 1, they will be level on points.

Katie needs to match Emma to be British number 1 outright.

Raducanu breaks to lead 3-2 in the first after saving 5 break points in her first service game.

Was handed a break with a double fault, but it was to love. Raducanu has done very well this year when presented with break points.

Was handed a double break with another double fault.

Raducanu has got into Ruse's head and will have this first set. Will be interesting to see how they come out for the second.

Emma was outplayed in the first few games, but hung in and once she got the break dominated the rest of the set.

Playing some good points now. Cracker to break in the second set. Petch was very happy!
