Fearnley loses 6-2 6-3. He was awful for the most part. This is the first bump in the road for him really since his meteoric rise. Be interesting to see how he manages it.
Jake just lost heavily to the far lower ranked qualifier in straight sets. I didnt watch the match, so all I have to go on are the stats. He failed to generate a single break point in the entire match. And faced a heap of BPs seemingly throughout. Low serve percentages across the piece. His opponent is an Argentinian journeyman who has been around for quite a while and never had a ranking inside the top 120. And I rather though Jakes preferred surface was hard courts, given his US college background. His rise up the rankings, and style of play until the French open has been nothing short of incredible. When he lost to Cam at the French there were flashes of absolute genius, but overall it was a very poor display and his double faulting was just off the charts - not something hed really been prone to previously. The grass court swing was, unfortunately, more of the same. Is there something thats changed since late May that might explain this blip, is this an inevitable lull after 12 months of uninterrupted success, or are there technical/coaching/external factors at play. He seems a very different player over the last 2-3 months. Wish him well, and Im sure its all part of his journey, but any insights that shed light on recent results?
That is a real shame, hoped for more from Jake. That said, he beat Cobolli at Queens, the Italian is currently ranked 18, and he beat Moutet who has been on form recently.
Whilst today is a poor result, I am not sure the grass was that bad, average really. I am not writing Jake off just yet!!

For the record:
L96: (Q) Juan Pablo Ficovic (ARG) WR 137 defeated Jacob Fearnley WR 55 by 2 & 3

Yes, it would be a bit weird to write Jake off - just yet or for quite some time to come.
Just like korriban though I find it a bit perplexing. Hopefully though he can reasonably soon get back to his previous form and then build on

It is but, just like we have seen with the recent returns to form from Cam and Dan after periods of quite dire form (relatively), and then suddenly they bounce back. Confidence, just something clicking, maybe something in their private lives that is holding them back? Who knows, but I have faith Jake will get it again (and his dip so far isnt anywhere near Cam or Dan's!)
And Jake did get PoM nominations in May and June, so very recently, for his Madrid performance and then Rome in May, and then his French run to round 3, and a run to the last 8 of Queens.
It was Eastbourne (after beating Cobolli) where he lost to Giron (sorry, was massacred by Giron) and Wimbledon (lost to Fonseca - can forgive that) and then here that didnt go so well, and here, that is over just one month of elapsed time.
It is 3 poor losses on the trot versus Giron, Fonseca and this Argentine chap, and 3 matches on the trot, so not good - but in context, the guy is doing amazingly well!
Jake had played 40 matches on tour by Wimbledon this year, 42 now. Keep that up and he would have hit 80 by season end near enough. Not Billy proportions , but a lot of matches for a year one pro and with all the travel. I reckon he hit a wall and probably needs a little mental break. May not have much chance to get another one but maybe being back in the US will help him over the next few weeks.
