Week 30 - WTA500 - Washington, USA - Hard

Emma & Elena really grew into the match and their quality of returns really showed. And some nerves I feel from Olivia & Tereza.

Pretty intense MTB with yes Emma & Elena's class putting them well in control of the MTB ( super lob by Elena, great backhand hitting by Emma ) but then frittering it away rather. Thumping ace from Elena got it back on course and they closed it out.

Radukina win by 2-6 7-6(4) [11-9]

TA had it right as a horrible draw for Tereza & Olivia if Radukina could get something going. And they did

Katie loses by 6-3 6-4.

I didn't see any of it but I imagine that it wasn't pretty

Katie lost 3-6 4-6
Katie was not playing well tonight and Sakkari was playing with great confidence. Katie went two breaks down at 2-5 in both sets and pulled one back each time. Katie had several Dfs and a foot fault, her ball throw seemed to off.

Yes, that sums it up really. Liv and Tereza started well, but as the match went on they were forced to become more defensive and made a few more errors. It doesn't take much at this level as many matches are very close.

Full marks to Emma who played very well, particularly in the latter stages. Rybakina wasn't serving well for most of the match but came up with the big serves when it mattered. The stats are mainly against them, but they saved 8/13 break points which is probably a key figure.

Don't want to jinx Emma but Kostyuk is on a 5 match losing streak.

That was very close all the way until Emma managed pull ahead in the last few points. 7-6(4)

Kostyuk broke first but Emma immediately broke back and then it went with service all the way to the tie break. Emma took the first 4 points of the tie break, Kostyuk the next 4, Emma the last 3 points.

It's really good to see Emma continuing to play at the high level we saw at Wimbledon. She deserved the first set. She was least on a par during the 12 games and deservedly won the tie break. More of the same please Emma

Emma had a point for 5-2* in the second but was broken. She's just held to 15 to go 5-4* ahead.

Although there is a close 3 way battle for top Brit, Emma looks like she is well ahead in the Race, presumably the others lose points as the season progresses. Looks like Emma could comfortably be top at year end though.

I didn't  jinx Emma. However there is no reason not to show Kostyuk's nationality as she is Ukrainian.
