That feels quite weak for a W50, but I guess non weaker than last week's men's event and a great chance for points. Zhang Shuai is class, and Vendula Valdmannova was a semifinalist at Junior Wimbledon but unproven on hard.
The start has been delayed by an hour - the first matches are only just about to start. Busy day there with all 16 round 1 matches and 4 doubles natches scheduled between five courts.
They've managed to get started on some singles matches:
*Zhang a break up on Daley (Zhang *3-1 Daley)
*Marni and Ranah on serve at the business end of their set (Banks *4-5 Stoiber)
*Jasmine an early break down (Conway 1-2* Bolkvadze)
*Most notably, Lois Newberry causing Katy a lot of problems early on (Dunne *2-5 Newberry)
Lois has also retired - and it does look serious. She collapsed on the ground during a point and it looked to me as if her knee went as she went for a backhand serve return down the T. After a long on-court chat with the physio she was helped off court. I think Katy would have won anyway, as she was leading by a break in the decider and starting to find some form.
