Weeks 27 & 28 - The Championships, Wimbledon (Womens') (grass) - main draw

A bit disappointing by some, especially given some starts, but your weeks and weeks of extra practice on grass doesn't stack up, as I doubted as soon as I read it, and Paul took the trouble to look into. And of course they were generally well outranked

Ultimately we have 3 through to R2, which was my own estimate, though yes I was counting on a couple of our GB #4 to #7 WCs rising to the occasion and making it through rather than Katie and Sonay pulling off the wins that they did.

 Its the middle rankers,

Fran WR 125

Harriet WR152

Heather WR 148

Jodie WR 164.

At the start the board seemed to be going with wins for these 4 with doubts for Sonay and Katie. Such is tennis! I do think the men have done better though.

Hopefully one of the 3 remaining can surprise us and Im just hoping we at least have one left in round 3.
Match stats havent looked great for any. of the girls over the past two days.

I'm not disappointed because I view it as a whole with the men

I don't see them as separate

That's the thing - some come good, some don't

Personally I feel the AELTC and LTA are going to be really pleased and I so hope they stick to giving out tons of wildcards

True, none of the women's wildcards won but:

1. Having the three youngsters generated a lot of press and interst
2. None of them disgraced themselves
3. The fact the youngsters were there may well have helped the others - took the pressure of the top players a bit as the press were focused on the kids, and it obviously helped Emna :)
4. The pseudo wildcards all lost too

And - obviously - the men nailed it - brilliant show - which justifies the policy for both

As it happens though ( well I guess it didn't just happen since they saw off the seeds in their mini sections ) Katie and Sonay have distinctly better looking draws than they had in R1 where they did well ( I'm not sure what match stats you are meaning? )

So out of it all, we go into R2 with our 3 highest ranked and clearly best players remaining, overall looking in as good form as I would have hoped pre tournament with two, to my mind quite reasonably, as betting favourites. Emma I think could have too tough a task.

So a win, indeed wins, would certainly not surprise me. Indeed I expect it.

And Coco knocked out so another top seed falls in the womans draw.

Yes the young guns did as well as you could expect and will have gained a great experience with this which will surely help them in the future but barring Fran who can struggle with her fitness from time to time it is the middle rankers who I was expecting a bit more from.

Im a little disappointed I have to say.

Feel like Harriet had the chance and Fran was in control and just finished which is not like her.

All well time for the lower ranked girls to go back to challengers build the ranking and have a crack at US open qualifying.

Personally I think the only Woman that really underperformed was Jodie. I was surprised people thought Harriet was likely to win. She's clearly struggling and has been for a while now. Even last year when she made the 3rd round, there was something wrong.

She's alluded to things going on in the background that have affected her play.

I agree, re Jodie's being the only poor performance

But, as people have said above, the fact that Coco lost, Jess Pegula lost, Qinwen lost, Paula lost....four top ten players all losing in R1 - that's the story ...  not that we maybe could have got one more win in a close match

5 qualifiers won as did 2 Lucky Losers. 0 wild cards won. I have always felt that qualifiers, because of extra confidence and extra grass court practice, have far more chance of winning a round than do wild cards who have just been parachuted into the main draw!

 Qualifiers had more chance also

because their rankings were a lot higher

But Coco and Qinwen and Jessica were all parachuted into the main draw as well

And all lost too - to players a lot lower ranked

As did tons of others, despite some having excellent warmup events

And Arthur and Jack PJ and Billy and Evo were all parachuted into the main draw as wildcards and won

Well Billy not a wildcard but I get your point! Think the men that won are more to do with being lower ranked than they show and the ladies are in pretty poor form more than anything else...

The 6th section (8th) of the womens has Alexandrova as the only seed left at 18th. Decimated. Amazing how many seeds have fallen in round one, great for the neutral like me to see what stories open up. Thought Yastremska was great this evening .
