Very good from Katie to stay strong in the final set.

It worries me that bar the top 4 GB players, I don't see anyone capable of climbing up to the top 100 in the next couple of years, bar Jodie
The experienced players are dropping back and the young pretenders are not ready yet.

I was worried in the 90s that no British player ever again would reach the Top 100.

Yes, I doubt we've had such a strong top 4 since the 80s bar a short a short perod when Bally, Anne, Laura and Heather crossed.

And I'd say we simply haven't had as strong a top 7, if you add in Jodie and still take account  of Harriet and Heather. 7 in the top 160.

Yes, anyone coming right through to that level in the next year or two replacing any who drop away ( and surely that's only looking like maybe Heather and possibly Harriet, but folk have discounted her before - tough times but she could come again ) is unlikely. Depth is an issue but I'd far rather have top 200 strength than 200 to 500 strength

And of course, we do have Mimi, Hannah and Mika continuing to progress.

British women's tennis is in a very good place!

Too early to say. Mimi has climbed 300 places. I dont think you can ask more than that TBH. Mika and Hannah are a year behind and just need the experience at pro level when they are ready. Mimi has talked about how she is still, limited at 17 as to how many matches she can play. That will change when she is 18 in September. Kind of think Mimi might be in a Sonay trajectory but lets see what happens. Of course there will be some who come through as well that still arent on the radar.

What we're really talking about is Heather and Harriet slipping back, but Emma, Katie and Sonay being up there, with Fran and Jodie having the ability to join them. And this allows the youngsters time to develop. Still think pretty good compared with previous eras.

No one 18 months ago saw Sonay as being capable of climbing up to the top-100

And yet here she is

No one saw Jake Fearnley in the top 100 a year ago and look where he is - dont write anyone off

 Indeed

Though paulisi was talking about the women

And Sonay was the prefect example for that - just look at the ranking, the predictions, what people were writing

(and there are a few I'd write off for the top-100 biggrinno)

I agree and realise he was - just using Jake as another example of someone coming from a place where no one was really thinking of them at the top 100 level. Saw Sonay interview earlier with Claire B, came across really well

So all 3 of our DAs won, taking down seeds 9 and 20. KB claimed the biggest scalp of the day, across the whole of this half of the draw.

None of our WCs won, but none were completely outclassed.

The 3 youngsters particularly all put up a decent showing, all playing against top 50 players, and gaining really valuable experience and more prize money to invest than they could sanely hope to generate in a couple of years playing ITFs.

Really good day.

Agree. Wish I'd had a few 20p bets now as results pretty much went as I hoped. Harriet was the only disappointing result really and I think it is clear her game is not in a good place right now. Her ranking will presumably drop a bit now too.

I thought the youngsters did ok. Mimi has that year extra and it really shows in my opinion. She looks like she will be a good player. With a bit more luck in the draw she could have had a better chance of winning.

To be completely honest I was a little disappointed with Hannah, especially in the first set. But she was better in the second and clearly has potential but there is a lot to work on which is what you would expect at 16. I thought Mika looked more ready for the adult tour. Her game is a bit one dimensional but there is a really good foundation to build on.

It will be fascinating to see how Hannah and Mika progress over the next 12 months. yesterday's experience will have done them all good though. Sometimes you learn more through defeat than victory.

Hoping for two more wins today with Jodie and Fran. Heather has a tough match but you never know. If she can move Tauson around she has a chance.

Looking at the live rankings, Katie currently back as our number one? Think Emma will struggle against Marketa, but Katie has a LL.

The media takeaway is that yesterday saw 7 British wins, a record for any single day in the Open era.

Today, Heather plays first on Ct12, Jodie and Fran third on 18 and 17 respectively.

Looks like we have seven entries into the mixed doubles plus the first alts. Henry and Liv are the top Brits on the entry list at #9. The list is 24 pairs, with 8 wild cards not yet added to make a 32 draw. Draw is tomorrow 02/07/25

Mixed entries haven't yet closed (thankfully, as it's a terrible list and would confirm the US Open has the right idea). So we'll see some new pairings go in but this initial set of entries gives us some idea of potential GB pairings (Marcus/Lissey etc...)

Yes and no

In live rankings Katie is 127 points ahead of Emma since Emma drops 240 R4 points from last year and Katie just 70 R2 points.

Emma is of course currently our #1 until an official rankings update says differently.
