Week 26 - The Championships, Wimbledon (grass) - men's qualifying

Hamish looked like being the creator of his own demise as he was very passive at the start of the tiebreak, but the Frenchman gave him a road back with a nervous double, then Hamish played some good, brave tennis to save the match points, and the the Frenchie doubles to hand him the match!

Well done!

I also assumed he was done and dusted once the MP and break lead w by. Looked inevitable in the MTB - thats a great win! And from two players we might not have predicted to be in the FQR. Lets hope Ryan can pull this off every game seems close

What a week for Hamish. Life changing, more than doubled his career prize money. Is this the first player to make FQR from wild card play-off since Marcus?

I have a friend who works at the Guardian, does investigative work, used to do lots into FIFA and football generally, Hillsborough etc. Now spread wider into Lucy Letby, etc.

Told me how he was asked to cover  premier league match, Man City i think, due to someone being ill. He duly did, but it went late into injury time and he has to file. Decided it was going to stay as was at 1 up; had it all ready and posted - last minute equaliser. Red face as sub editor queries; had to urgently re write the report in totality, and paper had to take it down.

hes stuck with investigative work since ! More time to craft the story!

QR2:  Martín Landaluce (ESP) WR 140 defeated (qWC) Ryan Peniston WR 269 by 3-6 6-4 6-4  cry

Down a break in the decider & gets it back, only to be broken again in his next service game.  no

Shane for Ryan. Landaluce has committed to the grass this year though and learning quickly. Top 8 in NextGen rankings as well. Hoped Ryan might do it, not to be.

Hamish. you've already made my day. Thank you my Scottish friend. Very good match. Brilliant ending.

Hamish thought he had gone when he lost an exciting point ( but a point he should ultimately have won ) for 4-8*. His racket was smashed to the turf and he stormed to the changeover.

But at least he kept a bit more beliec than Sheddie   Van Assche crucially then double faulted rather than drive it home further, Hamish regrouped, and Van Assche finally double faulted again at MP against him. Timing can be everything, Mr Frenchman!

Hamish to BBC reporter, whose name is refusing to stick in my memory (not Annabel Croft) & who asked him explain the last few minutes of the match:  "Somehow I won!"  biggrin

Hamish joins the top 500 with that win.

Got the deserved win this time - wild card play off qualifiers get a genuine win this time!
