Fran drags herself over the line. Harriet saved 4 or 5 match points to get back on serve at 5-4* but Fran, perhaps motivated by physical issues, decided just to tee off on everything. And given Harriet couldn't find a first serve that worked perfectly as she hit three return winners to break to love.
So Fran through and Sonay through, within a minute of each other
Very pleased that Fran was really attacking Harriet's second serve - standing SO far in and just smashing it for winners
Pleased because (a) Fran needs to win points quicker (IMO), if she can, use her strength, not over-tax her body unnecessarily, and (b) Harriet's second serve is really weak and people SHOULD attack it far more
Sonay did well, too
Jeanjean is not a grass court player BUT she IS a very natural ball player - she adapts well, she slices well, she varies things, she can basically play ball in any shape or form - so she's always going to give you something to think about and surprised you at times
And a solid performance from Sonay. These performances from her these days are just the norm. I think there is a lot more potential in Sonay for improvement so excited to think where she can be by the autumn.
This looked a rather nice draw for Mimi at this level. She's doing great but just needs to stay calm now that Volynets is starting to respond.
Mimi immediately broken back so it's 2-2* second set.
Mimi has broken again, seems to have rattled Volynets. Now needs to hold serve to back it up. Playing very patient tennis here today our 17 year old. No histrionics!
