Week 24 - WTA125 Lexus Ilkley Open Great Britain - Grass

Mimi is lacklustre today. Her UE count so far is huge. Marni playing well but frankly not having to do too much out there. No breaks yet in Second set. Marni leads 2-1

Not like Mimi. Maybe a bit under the weather? She usually fights hard. Marni pretty beatable opponent so I would say something not right.

But the thing is that something has not been 'right' for quite a while now. She has not been competing in many tournaments.

 As I understand she was injured went back and played a few tournaments in Japan and did well for ITF50# then seemed to get injured again. However following her success at Birmingham last week there are some horrible horrible comments on her Instagram feed. I cannot believe how someone would be so nasty to a 17 year old. I hope she is getting plenty of support to manage her social media. We know how it can affect players. Jodie, Katie and Emma have all talked about it.

Harriet was well in control of that first set at 3-1 up

And then just seemed to miss a few balls, go to sleep, whatever, and suddenly it's 3-6

 Trouble is I can believe it. There was a time I wouldn't have but social media has exposed us to the sad fact that this society has a lot of sheer scum in it.

While I accept each individual is different and some may be able to barely let it effect them, I sadly can't help feeling that many of the players, particularly younger ones, would be better virtually if not wholly off social media.

 The sensible option, to me, is to have a private-only social media presence for the players themselves, with friends and family

And then to have a family member run their 'public' profile - for those who want to build up a fanbase, commercialise their 'brand' etc

And let big sister, cousin, mum, whoever monitor that public account with the player having basically nothing to do with it

 I think it needs professionals to manage the public persona TBH. However everyone who is on Instagram or Facebook, TikTok etc and on this forum can help. Go on, find the trolls, report them. I have just been on Mimis feed and reported the racist and misogynist comments. It only takes a few seconds. If everyone did this then Meta might act.

 Youngsters generally can't afford professionals

Quite a few players use a family member very successfully - it depends what the aim is:

if it's to protect the player as priority, a family member will be perfectly equipped;

if it's to monetise their presence, that's a more commercial professional sort of thing, but that has to take second place, until their presence is one that really requires commercial management, by which time they'll be able to pay for help if they need it

Harriet loses 6-3 7-5. Not good, but also pretty much expected.

There's an old saying about using a long spoon when supping with the devil. Pre-dates social media, but is definitely applicable.
