Disappointing from Jake, especially as he dug in, saved two set points and broke back in the second set with some blistering play. (And then played a poor tie break and a very weak third set, with his serve all over the place.)
I'm expecting him to need a period of consolidation now he's moved up to the next level and to have a few frustrating losses like this. But I hope he'll figure it out.
And we have to remember that it was only a year ago that he was ranked 525 and winning the Nottinhgam Challenger from qualifying.
Jack D won it last year; re Jacob playing here - the only UK event this week is Ilkley challenger and his ranking is now well into the main tour events, so he will have chosen Stuttgart (over the Dutch event) to play at ATP Tour level. He will almost certainly be back playing at Queens next week with a wild card and then, presumably, into Eastbourne the following week.
Basically, his ranking is now better than playing in Ilkley Challenger this week!
Thanks Jon.
Gutted for Jake after the first set, hopefully just a change of surface and fatigue.
And he may have been better off playing in Ilkley as it turned out! Oh well.
I don't think a Top 50 player should be playing a Challenger, unless say in the second week of a Masters 1000. Even if you use Challenger events to climb up (or climb back up) the rankings, ultimately you have to be committed to compete in the biggest events. And he's certainly good enough.

Agreed- my comment was based on irony from previous comments in the thread
